Winter Military Teen Adventure Camps

Dedicated Camps for Military Teens With and Without Disabilities

The University of New Hampshire Cooperative Extension (UNHCE) 4-H Youth Development program is preparing for its 2012 White Mountain Winter Adventure Camps for teens living in military families.  These four camps will take teens, ages 14 to 18, to the Appalachian Mountain Club’s Highland Center in beautiful Bretton Woods where they will enjoy classic winter sports and activities, as they build friendships with other military teens.  Funding for Military Teen Adventure Camps has been made available through a partnership between the Department of Defense, Office of Military Community & Family Policy and the United States Department of Agriculture / National Institute of Food & Agriculture. disabled boy playing adaptive ice hockeyKeep reading – registration information is below!

What is the best part about these camps? There is only a $20 fee to cover the cost of a camp mementos.  All food, lodging, lift tickets, equipment rentals, and lessons are free. Transportation assistance is also available, including limited airfare funding for January sessions. Military teens with disabilities will be working with therapeutic recreation specialists, and each camper may bring along a personal care attendant, if needed. If your teen has an Individualized Education Program (IEP), check out the January sessions. The adventure camps are open to military teens from anywhere in the United States!

The White Mountain Winter Adventure overnight camps will give military youth the chance to work together, socialize, play, and experience new winter activities. Participation in these sports and recreation opportunities will help increase confidence, social skills, communication techniques, self-esteem, leadership skills, competence, and mastery. Increasing these skills is very beneficial in developing resiliency among military youth and promoting an active, healthy lifestyle. The camps are designed for military teens with and without disabilities, giving everyone a chance to join in the fun!

What is Operation: Military Kids (OMK)?

Visit the National OMK website

When National Guard, Reserve, and other military families living in civilian communities become mobilized, their children experience the stress of being a military kid.  These children have unique needs for special support and services, even though they still “look the same” to their friends and community. The University of New Hampshire Cooperative Extension  4-H Youth Development program partners with all branches of the military, American Legion, Red Cross, schools, Disaster Behavioral Health Response Team, the spiritual community, community recreation centers, Boys and Girls Clubs, and other youth and family organizations to form the outreach effort called Operation: Military Kids (OMK). This program functions in 49 states and the District of Columbia.

Goals of OMK

  • OMK collaborates with groups across the state to provide sustainable local support services to military youth before, during, and after their family members are deployed.
  • OMK creates networks of support for the military children and connects them with other military and non-military youth through a variety of recreational, social and educational programs.
  • OMK works to raise community awareness and foster understanding about the impact of the deployment cycle on the military member, family, child and larger community.
  • OMK organizations act as resources for military children/families for things like summer camps, after school programs, and more
