UNH Cooperative Extension's Vegetable Program

veggie photoNew Hampshire ’s commercial vegetable industry in New Hampshire includes approximately 300 growers and their families, who harvest approximately 5000 acres of a mixed variety of vegetables. These producers focus increasingly on ecological sustainability and profitability. The farmgate value of the industry is approximately $18 million dollars. Roadside farm stands and farmers' markets account for roughly 95 percent of total sales; therefore direct marketing is a major focus of Extension’s educational efforts.

The highest value vegetable commodities in terms of dollars are pumpkins, tomatoes, and sweet corn. Peppers, cucumbers, broccoli, lettuce, greens, peas, beans, summer squash, zucchini and others are also grown successfully.

The vegetable industry is supported by a strong educational commitment from UNH Cooperative Extension and the UNH Agricultural Experiment Station, in cooperation with the New Hampshire Vegetable & Berry Growers Association and the New England Vegetable & Berry Growers Association. Research funding has come from the state and regional vegetable organizations as well as the USDA Sustainable Agriculture Research Education (SARE), other USDA grantmaking programs and the New Hampshire Division of Pesticide Control’s Integrated Pest Management (IPM) grants.
