Insect Identification
Got a tick on your child, and don't know if might be the kind
to spread Lyme disease?
Or do you have beetles in the kitchen, and wonder what they are? You can get any NH
arthropods identified through the UNH Arthropod Identification Center. Samples can be submitted
either through the mail, or in person. If you rely on the mail, remember that modern postal
equipment turns your worrisome pest into a pile of unidentifiable bits in an instant, if you
don't protect it in some way.
Hours/Location:
If you bring in the sample yourself, remember that business hours
at UNH are 8 - 12 AM and 1 - 4:30 PM on weekdays. Bring samples to G28 Spaulding Hall, 38 College Road, Durham, NH 03824.
You can call 862-3200 with further questions.
Why do we call it the ARTHROPOD Identification Center? That's because we
handle insects and their relatives --- spiders,
ticks, millipedes... There are between 10 and 20 thousand
species of insects in New Hampshire, so identifying an insect, spider or tick
is often the crucial first step towards solving a problem.
Fee:
Currently the fee for identifying an arthropod is $5. If
you would like to know more about the process or submit a specimen, download
our submission form (be sure to read the instructions on the back).
