Childhood Obesity

fast food You may have read that childhood obesity has become epidemic in the U.S. But there are steps you can take to prevent your child from becoming a statistic.

There are many factors that contribute to childhood obesity. Two of the most important are inactivity and poor dietary choices. Research shows that television watching as well as playing video/computer games contribute considerably to inactivity, so limit your child to an hour per day and make sure he/she gets at least 30 to 45 minutes of moderate activity every day. Work with your school to provide daily physical education and get out there and play ball, bike and take walks with your child. On the diet side, encourage more fruits and vegetables, low-fat dairy products, whole grains, and watch portion sizes. Limit empty calorie foods like soft drinks, candy, and other sweets. Be a good role model for your child and adapt a healthy lifestyle yourself.
