UNH Cooperative Extension Offers Workshop Series for Landowners
Landowners interested in forestry and wildlife on their woodlots have an opportunity to enhance their knowledge and skills this fall through programs offered by UNH Cooperative Extension Forestry and Wildlife Program.
The Caring for Your Forest Workshop Series features four workshops. Landowners may attend one, two, or all four of these workshops. Each workshop is offered on the same day in two convenient locations. Landowners may choose the workshop location closest to them. The cost will cover refreshments and handout materials. UNH Cooperative Extension county foresters and specialists, and private foresters will teach the classes. Participants will be “in the field” for at least part of the day and should come prepared for weather.
All workshops run from 12:30-4:30 pm. Participants should eat lunch before the workshop. Workshop locations are the Andorra Forest in Stoddard, NH and the NH Farm Museum in Milton, NH.
October 9 - Chainsaw Safety for Weekend Woodcutters- $35 per person
Learn about safety equipment, chainsaw maintenance, hazard evaluation, and safe felling techniques from instructors Jake Bronnenberg, and Spencer Laramie, experienced New Hampshire Loggers and trainers for the NH Professional Logger Program.
October 16 - Your Woodlot and Wildlife - $10 per person
Learn techniques you can use to create, improve and maintain foraging, nesting, denning and cover for native birds, mammals, reptiles and amphibians. We will also introduce you to a variety of financial assistance programs (EQIP, WHIP, NH Small Grants) that can help pay for habitat projects.
October 23 – Cutting Firewood From Your Woodlot (Choosing the Trees to Cut and Those to Leave) - $10 per person Whether you cut your own firewood, or have a forester make those choices, this session will de-mystify how those choices are made. Starting with woodlot assessment and setting objectives, learn how to develop general recommendations and how to pick the trees to cut and leave.
October 30 - Selling Timber? Do It Right! - $10 per person
Selling timber is a once in a lifetime activity for most landowners. No single activity has such power to significantly improve or degrade your forest. Proper harvesting can provide income, improve wildlife habitat, and result in trails, better access, views, and a healthy and vigorous forests. Learn the steps to insure a successful timber sale. Topics include: goals and objectives, role of foresters and loggers, timber sale contracts, laws, and taxes. Visit an active logging job.
