Introduction to New England
Forests is an on-line course currently being offered for free by the
Lincoln Institute of Land Policy of Cambridge, Ma. It covers New England forest
history, ecology, protection, sustainability and stewardship practices. Written
for the small woodlot owner, it useful for anyone interested in learning more
about the forest.
Private Forest
Landowners is a cooperative of the USDA-Forest Service and The Nature
Conservancy. Among its features are many links and a connection to a larger
natural resources library, ConserveOnline.
Silvics
of North America, volumes 1 and 2 is the technical reference used by
foresters to understand the biology of trees. Native range, climate, soils and
topography,associated forest cover, reproduction and early, middle and late
growth, insects and diseases, and genetics are some of the topics included for
individual species.
The
Wood Handbook- Wood As An Engineering Material is probably more relevant to
the wood worker than the woodlot owner. It is a technical reference of the
characteristics of commercial lumber.
People's Glossary of Ecosystem
Management Terms is a comprehensive dictionary for the forest landowner.
Forestry Images is a fully
searchable database with pictures of over 3,300 images of insects, diseases,
plants, wildlife, and management practices. There is no cost to use the images,
but the USDA Forest Service asks users to register so they can gauge interest.
