GPS & You Workshop Series
Learn everything you ever wanted to know about how to use a handheld GPS receiver! These 3 hour workshops are designed to teach you about navigation and data collection with GPS receivers without taking up and entire day of the work week. These workshops are designed for people with no GPS experience, or basic GPS users who want to learn more about this ever more important technology. GPS Baiscs is the first of the series, and is strongly suggested as before taking any other GPS & You workshops. to take GPS & You II and III. Courses will be offered throughout the year on evenings and Saturday mornings, providing flexibility to fit your busy schedule.
Instruction and computer exercises will be based on the provided handheld GPS units (Garmin GPS 76). This ensures consistency of instruction and allows us to cover all workshop materials in the time provided. If participants bring their own units to the workshop, the instructors will help translate the activities to these units as time allows. Keep in mind that the general concepts of GPS will be useful no matter what GPS unit you own, and that the instructor will not be familiar with all GPS units.
GPS & You: GPS Basics - This course covers the basics of GPS technology, how to collect waypoints and how to navigate to points you have collected. Introductory presentations will explain the technology behind GPS, but most of the workshop will be spent outside putting handheld GPS receivers through their paces.

The first part of the workshop will be spent discussing the general idea behind geocaching and how to transfer geocaching information to your GPS unit. The second section of the workshop will be spent exploring local geocaches, providing an opportunity for all participants to experience geocaching firsthand.
GPS & You: Pictures, Points & Places - This course builds on GPS Basics to by taking the next step: downloading GPS data from your GPS unit on to your computer for use in GIS programs and Google Earth. In addition, we will cover the collection of digital photos in conjunction with GPS points, providing an interactive map of your pictures in GIS and Google Earth.GPS & You: Tracks & Routes - This course builds on GPS Basics to cover more sophisticated navigation and data collection. Habitat Priority Planner NEW in 2009!
The Habitat Priority Planner is an ArcGIS extension created by the NOAA Coastal Services Center used to make decisions about land use, conservation, and restoration. Different scenarios can be quickly explored—How would this restoration project impact the landscape? Where are wetlands that may contain species of concern? How many acres of forest are currently conserved? Thanks to the ease and speed with which this tool makes maps, visuals, and reports, the Habitat Priority Planner is very helpful when making decisions in a group setting.
This workshop will familiarize participants with all aspects of the Habitat Priority Planner and provide hands-on exercises to explore the tools functionality. While the tool was designed to be used in conservation efforts, the Habitat Priority Planner can be used to make desicions about any type of raster GIS data (co-occurrence maps, for example).
General topics:
