Summary:
The goal of GIS for Field Scientists is to teach students GIS and GPS, and have these skills immediately applied to the type of mapping projects and analysis commonly confronted by field researchers and scientists.
As part of the required class project, we provide opportunities for students to utilize their newfound skills in conjunction with on-going research activities, including collaborations with other Shoals courses and field scientists working on the island. We are also open to students developing projects based on their own interests, especially when their interests coincide with their academic programs.

symbolize GIS data; add labels and annotation
query data
use geoprocessing tools: merge, buffer, dissolve;
manipulate attribute tables: add fields, calculate values, and join tables
import data into ArcGIS
design maps using layouts
import GPS data into GIS
hyperlink images to GPS points
develop a data collection plan
structure GIS project files

A laptop is provided for each participant.
Course takes place at Shoals Marine Lab on Appledore Island, ME. Students need to apply through SML for course registration. Students will reside on Appledore Island for the duration of the course. Lodging, meals, transportation to and from the Island and two academic credits through either Cornell or the University of NH are included in the course cost.
