Habitat Priority Planner

Summary:

The Habitat Priority Planner is an ArcGIS extension created by the NOAA Coastal Services Center used to make decisions about land use, conservation, and restoration.

Different scenarios can be quickly explored—How would this restoration project impact the landscape? Where are wetlands that may contain species of concern? How many acres of forest are currently conserved? Thanks to the ease and speed with which this tool makes maps, visuals, and reports, the Habitat Priority Planner is very helpful when making decisions in a group setting.

This workshop will familiarize participants with all aspects of the Habitat Priority Planner and provide hands-on exercises to explore the tools functionality. While the tool was designed to be used in conservation efforts, the Habitat Priority Planner can be used to make desicions about any type of raster GIS data (co-occurrence maps, for example).

General topics:
delineation of important habitat areas

incorporation of relevant GIS data layers in habitat prioritization
interactive decision making in GIS

Participants will learn to:
-develop their own spatial analysis process, including defining goals, collecting data, performing analyses, and selecting criteria
-use common land cover data sets to classify habitats with the Habitat Priority Planner use addional GIS data to provide a further refinement of habitat selection
-understand and be able to apply landscape and custom analyses available in the Habitat Priority Planner
-prioritize habitats for land use management action
-apply the Habitat Priority Planner to any raster data set
