2008 - 2009 In-Service Descriptions

We're proud to offer the following in-service opportunities for the 2008-2009 year and this page is designed to categorize the in-services in four broad categories that should help staff and supervisors develop appropriate professional development plans. Although most of these opportunities are offered by our own staff, we also list national, regional, and local workshops and conferences that are of interest. Professional development plans should be developed with both Extension-sponsored and non-Extension opportunities as appropriate.

Note: Many of the in-services offered are listed multiple times because they fit under several categories. This page is not a registration page. In order to sign up for in-services, you must go to the In-services sign up page and indicate which in-services you plan to attend.

Description of categories:

  • Administrative - Workshops or in-services designed specifically for those who are supervisors, COAs, or others performing administrative duties are included in this category.
  • Core Competencies - Workshops or in-services that strengthen skills required of all Extension professionals – program development & evaluation, marketing/promotion, technology, volunteer management, grantsmanship, etc. are just a few examples of in-services related to core competencies.
  • New Staff - Workshops or in-services open to all but designed specifically for new (first 1-2 years) Extension staff.
  • Discipline Specific - Workshops or in-services that support specific program area or discipline skills and knowledge.  Food safety issues, weed identification, wildlife habitat, marine science, and livestock production are examples.

Changing Homeowners' Yard Care Behavior to Reduce the Threat of Water Quality Impairment

January 9, 2009, 12 noon - 4 p.m., Portsmouth or Boscawen, NH

Our jobs might be easier if people based their decisions and actions exclusively on the science-based information we share with them. Unfortunately, it’s not that simple. Individual decisions and actions are based on an entire set of influences. Come learn about a New England-wide CSREES-sponsored project being coordinated from UNH CE that is exploring the drivers behind residential lawn care practices in combination with cutting-edge research about turf nitrogen and phosphorus management in order to help reduce the threats of nutrient pollution from home lawns into local water bodies. If you are interested in the confluence of social science and natural resource science and what that means for outreach, come learn about this innovative, cross-disciplinary project.

Guest presenters will be the lead PIs for the turf / nutrient research - Dr. Karl Guillard of University of Connecticut and the social scientist Dr. Brian Eisenhauer of Plymouth State University.
