February 12 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., UNH, Morse Hall, 8 College Road, Durham

4-H is looking for leaders and members, 10 and older, who are excited about their 4-H project areas and science, and would like to become 4-H Science Ambassadors. As a 4-H Science Ambassador, you will help 4-H meet its national goal of helping to develop One Million New Scientists One Million New Ideas, by learning fun science related to your 4-H projects and bringing it home to teach and share with others in your community.  Those interested in becoming 4-H Science Ambassadors are invited to a 4-H Science Everywhere Discovery Institute at UNH to learn cool science activities in one of four areas (Plant & Animals Science, Health and Food Science, Environmental Science - Antarctica's Climate Secrets, and Engineering/Physical Science - Power of Wind). Youth and adult Science Ambassadors will receive training and follow up support to help bring the message of science fun back to your club and your county. While at the institute, participants will experience some of the scientific research that's going on at UNH through the faculty and graduate students responsible for the research. If you are interested in becoming a 4-H science ambassador please contact your local 4-H office or call the state 4-H office at (603) 862-2993.

Track: Engineering/Physical Science -The Power of the Wind

We will explore a number of Engineering & Physical Science principles (design, energy transfer, etc.) through this workshop focusing on Wind Power. 4-H Science Ambassador teams will complete a few hands-on activities from the 4-H curriculum, The Power of the Wind, and learn more about the most important variables that scientists have to consider in designing and constructing a wind turbine to produce 'free' renewable energy.

Track: Food and Nutrition

In this track, we will learn about the research going on at UNH regarding human nutrition. We will also hear from Maire Folan, a UNH Graduate and a research and development scientist at Stonyfield Yogurt about how she used her education to test and develop new yogurt products. Finally, we will develop some cake recipes of our own using the Cake Chemistry curricula that we will then cook and test.

Track: Plant & Animal Science
Title: Understanding my Animal Inside & Out
Location: UNH Organic Dairy
Led by: Claes Thelemarck, 4-H Extension Educator
Description: Get to know your pets and animals a little better. We will use the University of California Davis Youth Development through Veterinary Science Curriculum and some of the different 4-H CCS Curriculum to explore the science behind our animals. We’ll explore concepts such as animal behavior and physiology (the way they’re built), learn about making regular observations to monitor animal health and ways to practice the skills that animal scientists use in understanding animals. Participants will receive a copy of the UC Davis Vet Science curriculum and a basic materials kit to bring back to their county office for use by local 4-H Clubs.
