How to choose  the proper herbicide and when to use it :

I have an annual grass or grass like weed

  • Use a pre-emergent herbicide in the early spring; late April to early May. Another applications can be made 6-8 weeks later to help prevent winter annuals.
  • For crabgrass, apply when the forsythia comes into bloom.

Note: Use of a pre-emergent in the spring means you’ll have to seed any new grass in previous fall.

  • Use a post emergent herbicide when the weed first emerges. Young weeds are the most susceptible.
  • For summer annuals this will be in the spring. For winter apply in the late spring, summer or fall. Depending on species present.
  • Never allow annual weeds to go into bloom.
  • Post emergents for grassy weeds include the arsenates: MSMA, DSMA, and AMA. These herbicides can also be found pre-mixed with post emergent broad leaf herbicides. Acclaim is an effective herbicide for post germination crabgrass control.

I have a perennial grass or grass like weed

  • Determine if it is a sedge or a grass
  • If it is nutsedge: apply herbicide when 3-8 leaves are present.
  • If it is a grass (quakgrass, orchardgrass) apply a broad spectrum like glyphosate specifically on the undesirable plant. Careful not to get glyphosate on desirable grasses.

I have an annual broad leaf weed

  • Determine if it’s a summer annual or a winter annual.
  • If it’s a summer annual, use a broad leaf herbicide early in the spring as soon as  the weed emerges.
  • If it’s a winter annual, use a broad leaf herbicide in the late summer, early fall as soon as the weed emerges.
  • Find out how the weed propagates.
  • If it propagates by seed, never allow the weed to bloom.
  • If it propagates by rhizome, be sure to use an herbicide that moves within the plant so it translocates down to the rhizome.

I have a perennial broad leaf weed

  • Treat with an herbicide in the fall.
  • At this time, the plants are putting most of their energy to the roots to store for the winter. They will move the herbicide there too, for a total kill.
  • Be careful when using herbicide to treat for perennial broad leaf weeds, as they may injure desirable plants too. Read the label.
