What can we do in NH?

Fall foliage tourism is worth 800 million dollars per year. The timber industry is worth 1.5 billion dollars and creates 10,000 jobs. The nursery industry and urban trees are worth millions. We need to prevent ALB and EAB from entering our state. If they arrive, we must work to minimize their impact with sound pest management practices. Here is what you can do:

LEARN TO IDENTIFY THIS PEST. ALB has been in the Worcester area for at least 10 years. It wasn't a professional in the tree business who discovered this pest but an observant homeowner who noticed the oozing, foamy sap, emergence holes, and beetles. If you observe this on maple or birch, report it immediately!

DON'T MOVE FIREWOOD. As of July 2011 New Hampshire banned the importation of untreated firewood without a commercial or home heating compliance agreement. Firewood is a major source of damaging insects and diseases. This ban will protect our trees.Visit the N.H. Division of Forests & Lands firewood webpage.

If you have taken wood from the Worcester, MA area, even if it was years ago, please call Kyle Lombard (Div. of Forests & Lands, 464-3016), Piera Siegert (NHDA, 271-2561), or Karen Bennett (UNH Cooperative Extension, 862-4861). We'll come out and inspect it to make sure it's not infested. There is no penalty to you.
