Ready Kids

February 02, Department of Homeland Security DHS launches Ready Kids.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Advertising Council
Thursday, February 2, launched Ready Kids, a family-friendly tool to help
parents and teachers educate children, ages 8-12, about emergencies and
how they can help their families better prepare.

The Ready Kids program launched at Andrew Jackson Language Academy in Chicago with a roundtable discussion led by DHS Secretary Michael Chertoff and an interactive presentation for families by local first responders.

Ready Kids is the newest addition to the successful Ready campaign, a national public service advertising campaign designed to educate and empower Americans to prepare for and respond to emergencies, including natural disasters and potential terrorist attacks. Secretary Chertoff said, "We hope the Ready Kids Website and in-school materials will help facilitate discussions about this important subject and encourage all families to get an emergency supply kit, make a family emergency plan and be informed about the different emergencies that can happen."

Boys & Girls Clubs of America

There has been a request to clarify the relationship we are suppose to be having with Boys and Girls clubs based on the national MOA. This MOA is with National 4-H and Boys and Girls club for one year with the potential for renewal. It is made in connection with the 4-H Afterschool program. There is not an official MOA with National 4-H Headquarters.

You will find the MOA on the Staff Resources web page http://www.extension.unh.edu/4H/4HYDSR.htm. Please use for conversations with BGCA if it is helpful to you. It is intentionally quite vague to fit all purposes.

Accepting Donated Computers - How To Do It

4-H staff are often approached by local businesses and organizations on the issue of accepting computer 'castoffs' for our youth programs. To help us with possible concerns about accepting old computers, the CYFERnet Team is collecting information about the process, benefits and costs of using this strategy to equip a computer lab. If you have experience with this issue, please share your process and considerations with Trudy Dunham. She will compile responses and send the results back to us. Specific questions to answer follow:

Contact: Trudy Dunham, Program Director CYFERnet / goCyberCamp
University of Minnesota Extension Service Center for 4-H Youth Development
EMAIL: dunha003@umn.edu

Accepting Donated Computers - Survey Questions

- How do you decide what companies / organizations to go to?

- How do you approach the companies? What do you ask?

- What questions do you ask about a potential donation?

- Is there a checklist you use to determine whether a castoff computer is a good deal for you?

- In general, are there some rules or procedures you would suggest for
setting up a lab of castoffs?

Send your responses to Trudy Dunham at dunha003@umn.edu

Family Involvement: Storybook Corner

Harvard Family Research Project has launched the Family Involvement Storybook Corner in partnership with Reading Is Fundamental. The goal of this new web source is to provide information on using children's storybooks with family involvement themes to engage families in their children's education and encourage family-school-community partnerships, all while supporting literacy. Family involvement storybooks can be used to promote the awareness, discussion, and practice of family involvement in a wide range of settings -- including family literacy programs, family support and parenting programs, out-of-school time programs, and ESL programs.

Go to http://www.gse.harvard.edu/hfrp/projects/fine/resources/storybook/index.html

Storybook Corner provides an annotated bibliography of storybooks with family involvement themes for ages 4-8. You can also download a teacher lesson plan and parent handout for using a multicultural storybook to promote involvement. Future Storybook Corner resources will include an annotated bibliography of storybooks on family involvement among Latino families, tools for reaching out to Latino families, and information on their own research-inspired family involvement storybook -- "Tomasito's Mother Comes to School," a story about building home-school connections for an immigrant Latino family.

Preparing Youth Workers to Recruit and Retain Immigrant Youth

Would you like successful strategies for recruiting and retaining immigrant youth? The National Collaboration for Youth plans to help their affiliates improve in the delivery of services to immigrant youth. To do this, they are surveying to find out what is happening at both national and local levels. They hope this results in identification of promising practices related to where organizationa would most like assistance. The survey only takes 5 to 10 minutes, and you don't have to answer all questions if you don't have the data requested.
