Northeast Livestock Expo

Please share this information with those who you feel might be interested.

Northeast Livestock Expo Offers Opportunities to Producers

As a result of a grant provided by the Maine Department of Agriculture; the Maine Beef Producers, The Maine Sheep Breeders Association and the Boer Goat Breeders of Maine have joined together to create the North East Livestock Expo (NELE). To be held on the Windsor Fair grounds May 18, 19 and 20, 2007, NELE will draw beef cattle, sheep and Boer goats for shows, youth events and auctions.

For beef producers, there will be a commercial feeder calf sale and a purebred sale featuring multiple breeds. There will be both lamb and purebred sheep sales and the Boer goats will have a sale and a nationally sanctioned show. For all three species there will be youth shows, educational opportunities and many opportunities to have fun.

A large commercial trade show is bringing suppliers from throughout the northeast to exhibit and sell their agricultural products. A sale catalog features opportunities for both commercial vendors as well as farms to advertise and reach over 3000 livestock producers in Maine and throughout the northeast. The NELE planning committee is also seeking sponsors to help further support the event.

All activities will be open to the public who will also be able to make purchases from vendors who will be offering a wide variety of livestock value added products. Several horse groups are also planning two days of shows and clinics to round out the weekend activities.

For more information about the Expo, to find out about ways to participate or to get on the mailing list, contact Event Manager Ron Howard at Aldermere Farm at 207/ 236-2739 or e-mail at aldermere@mcht.org. Over the next few weeks additional information will be available on their website at www.northeastlivestockexpo.com.

CALLING YOUNG ARTISTS: ENTER THE 2007 JUNIOR DUCK STAMP CONTEST

CONCORD, N.H. -- Young New Hampshire artists, kindergarten through grade 12, are invited to submit original artwork depicting North American waterfowl to the New Hampshire Junior Duck Stamp Art Contest. The New Hampshire Fish and Game Department runs the statewide competition, which is part of the Federal Junior Duck Stamp Conservation and Design Contest of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, to give students a chance to show off their artistic talents and learn about conservation. The art competition is open to public, private or home-schooled New Hampshire students.

Entries must be postmarked by March 15, 2007. For competition guidelines, send your request to: Victor Young, N.H. Fish and Game Department, 11 Hazen Drive, Concord, NH 03301. Competition guidelines, including dimension requirements and an entry form also can be downloaded from http://www.wildlife.state.nh.us/Education/ed_Junior_Duck_Contest.htm.

The New Hampshire Junior Duck Stamp Art Contest will award first, second, third and honorable mention ribbons in four groups: grades K-3; 4-6; 7-9; and 10-12. The State Best-of-Show will be selected from among the first-place winning designs. Winning artwork in all categories will be displayed at N.H Fish and Game headquarters in Concord. The Best-of-Show New Hampshire winner advances to the national Junior Duck Stamp Design Contest, in which the three top winners receive a cash award and a trip to the adult Federal Duck Stamp Contest.

The Federal Junior Duck Stamp Conservation and Design Program is an integrated art and science activity developed to teach environmental science and habitat conservation. In the process of creating Junior Duck Stamp designs, students gain a better understanding of the importance of conserving habitat as they explore the esthetic qualities of wildlife, according to Victor Young, a wildlife artist and graphic designer for Fish and Game and coordinator of New Hampshire's contest. Teachers who want to integrate these lessons into their coursework can find a curriculum guide for teaching conservation through the arts at http://duckstamps.fws.gov.

4-H Youth Leader's Academy

Annual John Deere 4-H Youth Leaders' Academy
September 14-17, 2006
The 2006 John Deere 4-H Leaders' Academy offers a unique opportunity for youth-adult teams from land-grant institutions to develop new skills and knowledge in youth in governance and healthy lifestyles. Working alongside teams from across the nation, delegates from your state will explore strategies for implementing a Healthy Lifestyles initiative that integrates the principles of youth in governance. Upon their return, they will be prepared to engage other youth and adults from your state in more fully supporting your Healthy Lifestyles initiative.

The projects that youth-adult teams develop and implement in their states will empower them and others to address the emotional, mental, and physical aspects of Healthy Lifestyles, impact decision making around healthy living, and feel connected to their community. Teams are required to reach a minimum of 100-200 youth and adults in their state to promote Healthy Lifestyles in the context of Youth in Governance.

Thanks to the generosity of John Deere, all expenses of your participating youth member (including travel), and the expenses for your participating adult member (excluding travel) will be covered.

The focus throughout the Leaders' Academy will be on:
Understanding and implementing Youth in Governance
Understanding of latest research on emotional, mental, physical aspects of Healthy Lifestyles
Gaining resources and skills to be able to organize and run activities
Utilizing skills and experience to train others
Identifying a concrete plan of action for state teams

Youth and adults will come together in a full partnership to assess and address attitudes and beliefs about healthy lifestyles. During this time, participants will gain knowledge of the current research on healthy lifestyles and implementation strategies. They will work to finalize their state plan of action which should support the current work being done in their state around healthy lifestyles.

Join National 4-H Council and John Deere as we partner around Healthy Lifestyles, YIG, and the power of youth at the 2nd Annual 4-H Youth Leaders'' Academy on September 14-17, 2006.http://www.fourhcouncil.edu/JDLAApplication/
