eXtension offers a free on-line professional development opportunity on effective presentation skills for Extension educators. Included in the course are Seven Keys To Effective Presentations.

This course focuses on presentations for adults, though many of the concepts apply to youth as well.

You can access this course by going to the eXtension Professional Development site and selecting the course title Presentation Skills for Extension Educators. You'll need to sign in using your eXtension ID, which is free and available to UNHCE staff.

What's all this about Web 2.0?

Web 2.0 refers to a second generation of Web-based services--such as social networking sites, wikis, communication tools, tagging, and folksonomies--that emphasize online collaboration and sharing among users.

This previously presented session was conducted by Beth Kanter. Beth Kanter was recently recognized by NTEN as the most valuable member of the nonprofit technology community.

Beth Kanter is an experienced coach to "digital immigrants" in the personal mastery of using new web tools. Her work primarily deals with educational technology and working in communities. Many of the things she writes and presents about fit closely with Extension.

• Training Resources Guide: The UNHCE Training Resources Guide is undergoing a major revision. Some sections are still in the process of being updated. Several new listings are already available. New sections include online tutorials and discounts available to UNH employees.

This guide contains information on training resources available in applications utilized by employees of UNHCE, including Microsoft Office, Adobe products (Acrobat, PageMaker, PhotoShop), as well as operating systems, and applications used by smaller audiences, such as PictureTel, DreamWeaver, Blue Ribbon YOUTH enrollment, or WordPerfect. The CIS Training Center is offering a brand new class on October 13 & 14:

Photoshop CS: Level 1

In this course, students learn to use tools for selecting parts of images, and move, duplicate, and resize images. Students also learn to use layers, and to apply layer effects and filters to create special effects, including lighting and texture effects.

CBT and Training Resources Guide

Training Resource Listings

The UNHCE Training Resources Guide (http://ceinfo.unh.edu/Intranet/ITDE/trg/vend_app.htm) has been revised. This guide contains information on training resources available in applications utilized by employees of UNHCE, including Microsoft Office, Adobe products (Acrobat, PageMaker, PhotoShop), as well as operating systems, and applications used by smaller audiences, such as DreamWeaver, Blue Ribbon YOUTH enrollment, or WordPerfect.

Included in this guide is a listing of Extension or University-owned Computer-based Training CD-ROMs (CBT), which can be used for free. UNHCE has a library of CBT (Training CD-ROMs) available from the ITDE office. The CDs are free to UNHCE staff, and can be borrowed for up to 2 weeks. CIS also has free CBT available to be used on campus.

This CBT can be used interactively, and allows you to receive information on just the topics where you desire training. For instance, you can select a topic such as “Creating/modifying headers and footers” in Word. It will show you how to do that step-by-step. You can repeat any sections as needed, and skip to other sections.

CIS is offering training for faculty and others on the use of their SuperTec classrooms.

Dear Faculty Member:

CIS Academic Technology Audiovisual Services has created online, web-based tutorials for faculty and instructors using TEC.1, TEC2, and SuperTEC classrooms. These tutorials are available for instruction or quick reference. At the conclusion of a training module, faculty take a pass/fail quiz to obtain the combination to the audiovisual equipment in their assigned room.

A/V Services will continue to host live demonstrations for those who prefer face-to-face training. We hope that this new web-based option for training will provide a way for faculty to review instructions for using classroom technology resources, distribute room combinations, and provide an on-demand index for faculty to use as a reference at any time. In addition, once a user participates in module training or attends a live demonstration, they will be part of a classroom-specific list. This process will enable A/V staff to notify and communicate to faculty important room, hardware, and software updates pertinent to the classroom in which they are teaching

The modules will be available Aug 16, 2004 . To access, you must currently be scheduled with the Registrar's Office to teach in a TEC.1, TEC2, and SuperTEC classroom. Login to Blackboard at http://blackboard.unh.edu. Beneath your course list on the right, you will see a box labeled "My Organizations." Click on A/V Services Training module. If you are not currently scheduled in a TEC or SuperTEC classroom, but would like to participate in module training, A/V staff can create access for you. Call 862-2558 or email av.services@unh.edu with your request.

Our goal is to make the training modules easy to access, easy to navigate, and provide all the instructions needed to ensure that all A/V equipment in TEC or SuperTEC classrooms is easy to use. Sign up early for CIS classes. Not only are the most popular classes oversubscribed early; CIS has begun to cancel classes which are under enrolled two weeks prior to the class date.

Vendor-based Training

CIS has arranged with outside vendors to offer classes on a variety of topics for a nominal fee. The cost is typically $99 for a full day or two half-day sessions, or $198 for 2 days or 4 half-day sessions. That is less than half the cost of the training offered to the public.

Classes in the following topics will be offered in the next two months.

• Dreamweaver – 3 levels, plus a “What's New with Macromedia MX 2004” class
• PhotoShop
• Access Level 1
• PowerPoint – Level 1
• Transitioning to Excel 2003
• Transitioning to Word 2003

All Microsoft Office applications are taught using Office 2003. Dreamweaver is version MX 2004.

II. TheState of New Hampshire offers classes “at cost” to all UNH employees. This is at considerable savings from what one would pay with an outside vendor.

Overwhelmed with all that email? Does your Inbox have over 50 messages in it? Do you know how to label your email? Filter it?

I've put together a class on managing email using Eudora. The class should take about two hours, and I'm willing to conduct it for any group of six or more staff (at your site.) This probably won't be a hands-on class, but more of a lecture/demonstration. If held at your site, I can be available for personalized assistance after the class.

ACE, the Association for Communication Excellence in Agriculture, Natural Resources, and Life and Human Sciences, and NETC, the National Extension Technology Conference group, periodically gets together to offer workshops for its members, which include writers, editors, photographers, graphic designers, videographers, electronic media producers, marketing and public relations practitioners, researchers, web developers, database programmers, distance education specialists, educators and managers. They work in universities, government agencies and research organizations in the public sector, as well as companies and firms in the private sector.

While these workshops are offered to ACE/NETC members first, they are open to non-members as available.

Reminder: The ITDE office is using a different model to offer future training. We will offer training sessions based on needs. If you have a group of 6 or more people who desire training in a certain area, please contact the appropriate person below to arrange the time, place, and topics for training. Thanks to everyone who responded to our on-line Training Needs Assessment Survey. We received 67 responses, which was more than we had hoped for.

Here are some of the highlights:

Respondents would like to receive training on the following applications (in order from highest preference): Access, PowerPoint, PictureTel, PhotoShop, Excel, Windows XP, PageMaker, Word, Acrobat.

Respondents feel the following characteristics of training are important (from most important to least): Instructor present, cost, time involved, customized content.

Based on these data and our past experiences, we've decided to take a new approach to training in the coming year, that we call the "roll-your-own" method.

Here's how it works:

An office or other group decides they would like training in a particular subject (see list below). They contact the appropriate ITDE team member (see list below) and schedule a time, place, and topics for training. There needs to be a minimum of five people committed to participate in the training, and it may be opened up to wider participation if space and resources are available.

We have used this technique several times in the past year, and find that by tailoring the training to a particular group's needs and scheduling at a time and location convenient to the group (like the county office), the training is much more effective and efficient.

To further tailor training to the particular group's needs, it's our intention that the instructor-led training be more task-oriented, to equip Extension staff with the skills they need to perform their jobs.
