I have a few more workshop notices, and one more plea for help at Farm & Forest (thanks to those who have already volunteered!). As always this update and all previous ones are online at: Volunteers Working for Wildlife
1. I still need three more volunteers who can help staff our booth at the NH Farm & Forest Expo, Feb. 6-7. The open slots are below - email me if you can help out, and thank you!

2. The Green Mountain Conservation Group will hold it's annual meeting in Freedom on Sunday, Jan. 25, from 4- 7 p.m., featuring moose biologist Kristine Rines as the featured speaker. For more information, go to: http://www.gmcg.org/ Green Mountain Conservation Group is also sponsoring the "Wild & Scenic Environmental Film Festival" in Conway on March 22nd. Sounds fun! 3. Walk/Snowshoe in Brookfield/Wakefield - Sat., Jan. 24, 10:00 am-12:00 pm (snow date: January 25, 1:00-3:00 pm).
Please join Strafford Rivers Conservancy & Moose Mountain Regional Greenways members for a winter walk (or snowshoe depending on conditions) on 200 acres of varied habitat that includes a reclaimed gravel pit, forests, fields and wetlands. Matt Chagnon, UNH Professor of Forest Technology, will lead the walk and discuss the propertys natural resource features. This property, owned by Tom and Dulcie Lavender, was recently conserved by two conservation easements. Registration is free. The walk is co-sponsored by the Strafford Rivers Conservancy and Moose Mountains Regional Greenways. 4. Are you interested in looking for Big Trees? UNH Cooperative Extension will be holding another tree measuring workshop this spring at Plymouth State University, with a field trip to Quincy Bog in Rumney (tentative dates are for April 17 or May 1). Please contact Rockingham County Forester Fred Borman if you are interested in joining the "Big Tree" mailing list (email: Fred.borman@unh.edu).
5. Upcoming Events & Workshops
NH Farm & Forest Expo:Friday, Feb. 6 (9 a.m. - 8 p.m.) & Saturday, Feb. 7 (9 a.m. - 4 p.m.)
This annual event is held at the Center of NH-Radisson Hotel in Manchester (700 Elm Street). There are lots of booths, activities, educational events, and workshops related to both farming and forestry. Admission to the Expo is $7.00, but meetings and workshops are free (located in rooms off the Expo floor). For a complete schedule of events and workshops, visit the web at: NH Farm & Forest Expo
Booth Volunteers Needed
Once again, we are looking for volunteers to help staff the UNH Cooperative Extension forestry and wildlife display and the wildlife activity kits at the Farm & Forest Expo, Feb. 6-7, 2009 at the Center for NH Raddison in Manchester. You will have a great excuse to visit the Expo and will greatly help out Cooperative Extension staff (who will also be on hand). This year, we are only staffing the booth with one volunteer, plus a staff member, so we'll be sure to keep you busy and entertained during your shift. Admission to the Expo will be complimentary for volunteers (others will be charged $7). Time slots include:

2. Critical Wildlife Habitats in New Hampshire - Saturday, Feb. 7, 1 - 2:30 p.m., Hawthorn Room
Bring a friend who is new to the topic of wildlife habitat management! In this free workshop, you will learn to recognize habitats on your land that are critical for supporting rare wildlife in New Hampshire. Learn about the threats facing wildlife, and what landowners can do to help, including land stewardship recommendations, and where to get technical assistance and other resources. Backyard Maple Sugaring - How to Make Your Own Maple Syrup! Tuesday, February 3rd, 2009, 6:30 to 8:00 PM, Keene, NH

The sap will be running soon! Have you thought about making your own maple syrup? Do you want to know what is needed? Attend this workshop if want to learn the steps, from the tree to the table plus the equipment needed. This special workshop is geared to first-timers and beginner maplers having less than 75 taps. All aspects of maple sugaring will be covered, including tree identification and tapping, collecting and boiling sap, finishing, filtering and packing syrup. Equipment and supplies needed, especially sizing and operating small evaporators, homemade and commercial, will also be discussed. The workshop is FREE, but registration is required. Please call Cheshire County Cooperative Extension office before January 30th at (603) 352-4550 to register and be guaranteed a seat.
