Woodcock Ecology and Management, Thursday, April 16, 2009, Lyme, NH

Landscaping at the Waters Edge Presenters Training – March 5, Meredith, NH

Are you interested in doing education about ecological landscaping in your community?  This is a a workshop designed for Master Gardeners, Community Tree Stewards, Coverts Volunteers and Lay Lakes Monitors.  The workshop will familiarize you with a program you can use to do outreach, designed for lakes associations, garden clubs, libraries, town boards and others can. Teaching materials will begiven to participants along with the book, Landscaping at the Water’s Edge: An Ecological Approach. Participants willbe asked to present the program to two groups within the next year. Participants will be able to sign up for talks already booked or can take advantage of future opportunities.   Registration and more information about the agenda can click here for the flyer

 

Oiled Wildlife Volunteer Training – April 18, 2009, Durham

Get trained so you can be prepared to help during the next oil spill involving wildlife.  To learn more about this all-day training (9 a.m. – 4 p.m.) at the UNH Coastal Response Research Center, call Rebecca Dunne at Tri-State Bird Rescue and Research at 302-737-9543 x109.  There is no cost for the workshop, but they ask that participants be willing to volunteer if they go through the training.

Coverts Advisory Committee Meeting a Success

The Coverts Advisory Committee had a great meeting on Feb. 6th at the Farm & Forest Expo.  Attended by 20 staff, partners and Coverts volunteers, we collected ideas, reflected on the past year, and made plans for 2009.  To read notes from the meeting, click here (they are posted on the Coverts website, under “Resources for Coverts Volunteers”).

Volunteer Opportunities

4-H Spaces Conference, Sat. April 18, 2009, Epping

I’m looking for a couple of volunteers who could work with youth for about 1 ½ hours doing wildlife-related activities at this annual youth conference. We’ve got the wildlife kits, art supplies, and some ideas, but you can design your own program if you are so inclined!  These youth are 4-H members, ages 9-13.  Please email Malin if you’d like to help out!

 ***SAVE THE DATE:  Sat. March 7th, Danbury – A Coverts Gathering! ***

The Coverts Project is sponsoring another informal walk (snowshoe!) on Saturday, March 7th.  We’ll be snowshoeing at the Danbury, NH property of Coverts Cooperator Andy Powell (CC95).  Bring friends and family for an informal day outside, learning about the Powell’s many management projects focused on wildlife, sustainable forestry, and outdoor recreation.  Look for details to come!

 

Stonyfield Wuvs Wabbits, Sat. Feb. 14, Londonderry, NH

Experts on the endangered New England cottontail will present information to the public.  FREE bunny-related crafts, organic treats and face-painting for kids. The event, held at the Stonyfield Farm Visitors Center (10 Burton Dr., Londonderry) is being held to promote public awareness of this locally endangered species, which are found on the Stonyfield property. 

 

Study of Winter Mammal Habits on Birch Ridge, Sat. February 14, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m
(Weather date: Sunday, February 15)
Birch Ridge and Coldrain Pond, New Durham, NH, Sponsored by the Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests. Learn about winter wildlife ecology and mammal habitats near Coldrain Pond and the sprawling Birch Ridge in New Durham at this indoor/outdoor event. Mid-February is reliable for deep snow and love in the air the annual mating season for many fur-bearers runs from mid-February to mid-March. Foxes, coyotes, bobcats, fishers, weasels, mink, otter, and skunks begin to breed as the days grow longer even as snow continues to fall. Tracking can be excellent!  A moderately strenuous hike. Bear Paw Regional Greenways Annual Meeting, Sat. Feb. 14, 8:30 a.m. - lunch

Timber Tax Update, February 27, 12 - 1:00 p.m.

This is an online program (“webinar”) that you can participate in from your computer.  Presented by Linda Wang, a forest taxation specialist from the US Forest Service, the special 1-hour tax program provides an update on timber tax to assist landowners and foresters in the 2009 filing season. Sullivan Co. Timberland Owners Assoc. Annual Meeting, Sat. April 18, 2009

This annual potluck dinner will be held at the Ahern Building, Sullivan Co. Farm, in Unity from 5 – 9:00 p.m. and will feature UNH Cooperative Extension forest industry specialist Sarah Smith presenting “They Sawed Up a Storm.”  If you haven’t heard this fascinating talk about women sawmill workers in 1942, you are in for a treat!  For more information, click here.

Do you work with a school who might be interested in a wildlife presentation?  NH Fish & Game’s Wonders of Wildlife Program is accepting requests through Feb. 27th  for programs this spring.  There is no charge for the programs.  To learn more, click here for their website
