Volunteer Opportunities
4-H Spaces Conference, Sat. April 18, 2009, Epping
I’m looking for a couple of volunteers who could work with youth for about 1 ½ hours doing wildlife-related activities at this annual youth conference. We’ve got the wildlife kits, art supplies, and some ideas, but you can design your own program if you are so inclined! These youth are 4-H members, ages 9-13. ***SAVE THE DATE: Sat. March 7th, Danbury – A Coverts Gathering! ***
The Coverts Project is sponsoring another informal walk (snowshoe!) on Saturday, March 7th. We’ll be snowshoeing at the Danbury, NH property of Coverts Cooperator Andy Powell (CC95). Bring friends and family for an informal day outside, learning about the Powell’s many management projects focused on wildlife, sustainable forestry, and outdoor recreation. Look for details to come!
Stonyfield Wuvs Wabbits, Sat. Feb. 14, Londonderry, NH
Experts on the endangered New England cottontail will present information to the public. FREE bunny-related crafts, organic treats and face-painting for kids. The event, held at the Stonyfield Farm Visitors Center (10 Burton Dr., Londonderry) is being held to promote public awareness of this locally endangered species, which are found on the Stonyfield property.
Study of Winter Mammal Habits on Birch Ridge, Sat. February 14, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m

Birch Ridge and Coldrain Pond, New Durham, NH, Sponsored by the Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests. Learn about winter wildlife ecology and mammal habitats near Coldrain Pond and the sprawling Birch Ridge in New Durham at this indoor/outdoor event. Mid-February is reliable for deep snow and love in the air the annual mating season for many fur-bearers runs from mid-February to mid-March. Foxes, coyotes, bobcats, fishers, weasels, mink, otter, and skunks begin to breed as the days grow longer even as snow continues to fall. Tracking can be excellent! A moderately strenuous hike. Bear Paw Regional Greenways Annual Meeting, Sat. Feb. 14, 8:30 a.m. - lunch
The annual meeting, held at Coe-Brown Academy in Northwood, will feature UNH Wildlife Professor John Litvaitis, who will discuss his research on the effects of roads on wildlife and habitat connectivity. Timber Tax Update, February 27, 12 - 1:00 p.m.
This is an online program (“webinar”) that you can participate in from your computer. Presented by Linda Wang, a forest taxation specialist from the US Forest Service, the special 1-hour tax program provides an update on timber tax to assist landowners and foresters in the 2009 filing season. Save the date for this workshop, which will take place from noon through evening, where you will have the opportunity to witness the fascinating flight patterns of singing male woodcock. More details to follow – new Coverts Volunteer Jim Kennedy is helping to organize this workshop, in cooperation with UNH Cooperative Extension, NH Fish & Game, and the Northern Forest Woodcock Initiative. Sullivan Co. Timberland Owners Assoc. Annual Meeting, Sat. April 18, 2009
This annual potluck dinner will be held at the Ahern Building, Sullivan Co.
