New Workshop Announcements
NH Dragonfly Survey Training Workshops – offered at several locations:
Thursday, May 28, 10-4, Audubon’s McLane Center, Concord
Friday, June 12, 9-3, Audubon’s Paradise Point Center, Hebron
Saturday, June 27, 10-4, Pinkham Notch Visitor Center
Now in its third year, the NH Dragonfly Survey is again training new volunteers (or offering experienced dragonfly surveyors a refresher). The cost for the workshop is $30, which includes a field guide. To learn more, click here for the workshop brochure. The NH Dragonfly Survey is a join project between NH Audubon & NH Fish & Game.
Volunteers Needed to Restore Floodplain Forest on Connecticut River
NH Fish & Game is doing a restoration project at the Wilder Wildlife Management Area in Lyme, NH on May 6 & 7 (between 10 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.). Volunteers are needed to help plant 1,500 silver maple seedlings. Any amount of time you can contribute is welcome. Bring water, lunch, boots, gloves, sunscreen and bug spray (if needed). Directions to the site: Directions: From the center of Lyme, travel west on East Thetford Road. This annual event, held at the White Mountain Chalet in Berlin this year, is a great way to start your outdoor season. The theme this year, “The Changing Face of Forest Industry” will bring you up to date on a variety of forestry & wildlife topics. This event always sells out, so don’t delay if you want to attend. Black Fly Breakfast, - April 29, 2009, 7:30 – 11:30 a.m.
This is an opportunity to hear the latest updates on forestry, logging, and wildlife, meet with foresters and industry folks in an informal setting, and learn who is doing what in southern New Hampshire. This annual event has a new location this year at Pat’s Peak Ski Area. The event always sells out, so don’t delay if you want to attend. Registration materials are available online here.

Come meet the new Grafton County Extension Forester, Dave Falkenham, at this spring walk at Bruce and Sarah Schwaegler’s Tree Farm in Orford, NH. We’ll gather for coffee overlooking Indian Pond, then spend the morning visiting wildlife openings and managed woodlands that the Schwaegler’s have worked on over the past decade. Sarah is a renown wildflower enthusiast and expert—you are guaranteed to learn something new from her! Click here for the event brochure, including directions. The application period is now open for the 2009 Coverts Workshop, to be held at a new location (the Barbara C. Harris Conference Center in Greenfield, NH) September 23-26, 2009. Coverts Cooperators are our best source of new participants—you know the program and the type of person who will benefit from the training. Please help us fill our next class of volunteers with other wildlife and habitat enthusiasts!
The application materials are posted online at our website: www.NHCoverts.org. I am also collecting names and addresses of potential applications, to whom I will send a personal note, encouraging them to apply. Vernal Pools and Wetland Wildlife, Saturday, April 25, 2009 12:30 PM to 4:00 PM, Harris Center for Conservation Education
Spring is around the corner and soon the snow and ice will be melting and the wetlands of New Hampshire will once again come back to life. Vernal pools, marshes and shrub wetlands have been identified in the New Hampshire Wildlife Action Plan as habitats in greatest need of conservation in New Hampshire. Please come dressed for the field and have boots suitable for wet ground - Hip/chest waders are not required, but participants are encouraged to bring them. Workshop is free, but please call the Cheshire County UNH Cooperative Extension office at (603)352-4550 to register. New Workshops
Controlled Fire Management Event – April 13, Northwood
On Monday, April 13 at 6 p.m., Harmony Hill Farm (owned by Carl Wallman, CC05) will be conducting a controlled burn on the fields at the farm. People interested in watching the event are invited to attend. The burn gives local fire departments an
opportunity to train fire fighters, and serves as a conservation measure for Harmony Hill Farm. This fire is the largest grassland fire training held in NH--sometimes more than 50 firefighters show up for the training. Ice Storms Workshop: Ecological Effects, Tree Health & Landowner Decisions – April 18, Harris Center, Hancock
The ice storm of December 12 was a disaster for some residents and a nuisance for others, as the forest damage varied across the landscape.
