NEWS

Submissions for “Making Tracks” Newsletter

I’m working on a new issue of our Coverts Project newsletter, and I would welcome your submissions for the “Happenings” section.  Just send me an email with your news about conservation projects, habitat work you are trying out, animals you’ve seen on your property, volunteer efforts you are involved with…anything interesting you can share to help inspire the rest of us, even just a little!  Click here to send email with your news and/or photos. Deadline is June 20th.

New Brochures Coming Soon!

The newest Habitat Stewardship Brochures are being printed this week, and all Coverts Cooperators will receive copies in the mail shortly.  The new brochures cover the following critical habitats: Appalachian Oak-Pine Forests, Shrublands, Lowland Spruce-Fir Forests, and Peatlands.  You will also receive (in the same packet) a copy of another publication, of particular interest to Coverts folks in the southern half of the state:  “New England Cottontail Rabbits in New Hampshire,” which is also available online here.  All of these publications are aimed at NH landowners—and are available for free.  I encourage you to tell others about them, and use them in your outreach efforts.

Coverts-Related Wildlife Outreach Grant Successful!

We are pleased to announce that UNH Cooperative Extension was successful in a recent grant proposal that will mean new volunteer opportunities for Coverts Cooperators in the Upper Valley Region of New Hampshire.  We received a grant from the Wellborn Ecology Fund of the NH Charitable Foundation to create a wildlife and habitat outreach program (e.g. speaker’s bureau) comprised of Coverts Cooperators interested in public speaking.  We are very excited!  We’ll pilot the program in the Upper Valley, and hope to bring it to other regions of the state in the near future.  If you are in Grafton or Sullivan Counties, we’ll be contacting you this summer to solicit those interested in participating.  Stay tuned!

Managing Fields for Wildlife – Friday, June 19, 12:30 – 4 p.m.

The Community School, South Tamworth

This is the last workshop in the popular Spring Wildlife Workshop Series (click to link to brochure).  Hayfields, pastures, and old-fields that are becoming “shrubby” provide critical habitat to a large variety of wildlife species in New Hampshire. Landowners have many options for providing habitat for wildlife in fields they manage for hay or livestock, as well as in small fields that are just kept open through occasional mowing. Participants will learn how field acreage and the species and structure of plants growing in fields determines what wildlife species will use field habitats. We will introduce a variety of management techniques that can be used to attract and support different wildlife to fields of any size. Register by phone by calling 603-862-1028 or send email to Debra Anderson and UNH Cooperative Extension.
