Dear Coverts Cooperators, Partners & Friends,

Have several pieces of news to share with you.  Also, thanks to the forty-five Coverts Cooperators who have completed the survey so far.  That represents 15% of our active volunteers – let’s see how much we can raise that figure by the time of my next update!  Please...take the survey today!

Cheers,

Malin

The annual Coverts survey is ready for all Coverts Cooperators except the newest class, who don’t have to fill it out until next year...enjoy your rookie year, Class of 2010!.  The survey has some new questions this year, in an effort to coordinate our data with other New England states who run Coverts-like programs.  But it should still only take 15 minutes.  Please take it today, since you know I’ll keep bugging you until you do!  Thank you so much for your help! J

Using silviculture can help you manage for firewood, timber and wildlife. It helps you choose which trees to cut and which to leave for future growth. Learn about tree succession and tolerance, soils, group selection, shelterwood, clearcuts, thinning, and other topics related to the art and science of woodlot management.  Click here for more information, including registration (cost is $10), or call 862-1028.

Willard Pond Pre-Harvest Tour

Nov. 13, 9-noon, Antrim

Join Audubon’s director of land management, Phil Brown, on a walk up Goodhue Hill at NH Audubon’s largest sanctuary, the dePierrefeu-Willard Pond Wildlife Sanctuary in Antrim and Hancock.  Also leading the walk will be consulting forester Jeremy Turner and UNH Coop. Ext. forester Jon Nute.   Stewardship plans call for creating a 5 acre wildlife clearing atop Goodhue Hill to release the old apple trees and other fruiting shrubs.  This will benefit a wide variety of wildlife, from ruffed grouse and bluebirds to snowshoe hare, moose and bobcats.  We will also view areas planned for other forest harvesting to see how these management activities will provide habitat diversity to this large property.   This is a moderate hike of about 2 miles round trip.  To register, please phone Phil Brown at 224-9909x334 or E-mail pbrown@nhaudubon.org .

This winter, work will begin on the Martineau Tract, a NH Fish and Game property located off Henry Law Avenue in Dover. COVERTS NEWS

New!!! NH Wildlife Sightings Database

A way to share your NH wildlife sightings online with NH Fish & Game (and everyone else!).  This is an exciting new development for everyone in New Hampshire interested in wildlife and species conservation.  Now anyone can get involved in inventorying wildlife across the state.  The online database will take some learning – but we encourage Coverts Cooperators to go ahead and get an account on the site.  It’s really cool!!!
