I've been enjoying meeting with Coverts volunteers serving on Conservation Commissions in the Route 2 corridor in southern Coos County, as part of my work with Taking Action for Wildlife. Saw Larry Ely of Shelburne, John Scarinza and Edith Tucker of Randolph, and Dave Govatski and Bob Ball of Jefferson. They're all involved in great wildlife-related projects in their communities, with more planned!
After a recent meeting in Jefferson, Dave Govatski emailed me this wonderful photo of a spruce grouse, after I mentioned I hadn't seen one before (Dave says: "male spruce grouse I saw on Monday morning near Ferdinand, VT in the Northeast Kingdom".)

As usual, the northern half of Coos County's always forgotten! We've got plenty of wildlife up here, and many folks who are very interested in all our wildlife and care about it, etc. It'd really be great if sometime the Coverts folks could hold something "up here" (ie., north of Stratford). Now that the Tillotson Center is almost complete here in Colebrook, there's a great place for indoor meetings, and only a short ride to many "wild" areas that are filled with all kinds of wildlife. Heck, I've even watched a moose trot right down Main St.! Notchview Campground, just down the hill from my home, would also host a Coverts gathering - as it's previous owners did several yrs. ago, and they suggested we have a wildlife/woods trail up here, so Dick Mallion, me, Dave Govatsky and others have worked to maintain the Lyman Forbes Mem'l. Trail ever since. Lyman Forbes once owned all of this property, and what's now the Inn at the campground was the farmhouse. The new owners are VERY wildlife interested, and have worked on the trail with me since they bought the business last spring.
Anyhow, FYI.
