Jeffrey Schloss
Extension Professor/Specialist, Water Resources - LLMP
Biography
Jeff joined UNH CE in 1989. He holds a joint appointment as a Research Scientist in the UNH Freshwater Biology Group, and as a Water Resources Specialist with UNH Cooperative Extension. Since 1986, he has been the coordinator of the New Hampshire Lakes Lay Monitoring Program (NH LLMP), a grass roots lake and tributary monitoring program initiated in 1979. Past employment and appointments include research work in biology, water quality and aquatic ecology with the Smithsonian Institution Radiation Biology Laboratory, U.S. National Park Service, U.S. National Institutes of Health, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Naval Research Laboratory and the U.S. Geological Survey. Jeff has taught classes in Aquatic Ecology, Limnology (the study of lakes), Watershed Ecology and Lake Management.

- Use of Biological Indicators for Water Quality.
- Vertical Stratification of Planktonic Organisms.

Program Specialty Areas
- Develop Water Resources Protection Outreach programs and materials for citizens, students, local decision-makers and educators. Topics include watershed protection and stewardship; water quality; shoreline, wetland and riparian area buffers; non-point source pollution detection and mitigation; wellhead protection.
- Coordinate the NH Lakes Lay Monitoring Program, a statewide lake and stream volunteer monitoring program.
- Devise cost-effective water quality and watershed monitoring protocols for citizens monitors and students.
- Assist monitoring groups with data management, analysis, interpretation and presentation.
- Serve as a Technical Advisor to other state, regional and national citizen environmental monitroing programs and networks.
