Cathy Neal
Extension Professor/Specialist, Ornamentals


Biography

Cathy has been at UNH for eight years, and holds a split appointment: 70% Extension, 20% teaching and 10% research. She has experience with the University of Florida Extension as well. Her primary interests are in nursery production and landscape establishment and maintenance of trees and shrubs. She teaches classes in Introductory Horticulture and in Landscape Management, and coordinates the internship program for horticulture majors.


Current Research
  • Nursery production systems - evaluating innovative container systems for producing and over-wintering nursery stock. This involves studying root growth and physiological responses of container-grown plants to cold temperatures.

  • Cut flower evaluations - production and marketing evaluation for cut flower crops such as Eustoma grandiflorum. Also evaluation of woody shrubs such as pussy willows and red-twig dogwood for cut branch crops.

  • Production practices for no-pinch fall garden mums.

Program Specialty Areas
  • Program emphasis is on efficient and environmentally-sound production methods and landscape practices, especially nutrient and water management. Production systems and cultural practices are being evaluated which maximize growth in our short season, such as use of the pot-in-pot production system and innovative over-wintering methods. Selection, planting and establishment practices for landscapes.
