Burro Mountain White Rice Popcorn
Coos county Field Specialist Steve Turaj dabbles with odd plants in his spare time, “too maintain a healthy gene-pool” he says. “Burro Mountain White Rice Popcorn” in one such plant. You may have seen it at last October’s Fruit & Vegetable Seminar in Whitefield. The original seed was found in a clay pot in the New Mexico Mountains. At that time it was believed to have been 600 to 1000 years old. Obtained from the USDA germplasm bank in Iowa, these have been grown to harvestable maturity in Lancaster, NH for three years running. They seem to be fairly cold soil tolerant. The above Burro Mountain Popcorn was grown in Lee, NH this summer.
