Andrea Sawyer joined the Cheshire County Extension Office in June 1988. Having served as a 4-H club leader and an active 4-H'er, she was familiar with the 4-H program. In Cheshire County, Andrea worked primarily with the animal and plant science project areas. She recruited new volunteers to manage clubs and coordinated county activities and events. She also promoted STEM activities in the afterschool setting.

“I grew up in the world of 4-H, and it taught me many skills to becoming successful in a career that I have loved. I plan to continue volunteering for this organization that brings so much to the youth of New Hampshire,” she said.

Sawyer has served as a field specialist at the state level for animal science, working with the beef, dairy and working steer projects. She also has served as chair of the New England 4-H Dairy Committee and has overseen activities for youth in the dairy project at the Eastern States Exposition.

Sawyer loves to see the growth in these youth when given the opportunity to travel beyond New Hampshire to attend regional and national competitions and events.

Many of the youth who she has guided continued the animal science pathway into their careers, and she takes great pride in their accomplishments. Youth that she has worked with have gone on to become veterinarians, teachers, nutritionists, managers of large dairy and calf operations, and some have even purchased their own farms.

When asked about Sawyer, 4-H State Leader Kate Guerdat had this to say:

"For over the past 30 years Andrea Sawyer has bled green, supporting youth and families in countless 4-H experiences throughout Cheshire County and beyond. From local 4-H activity days to National 4-H dairy conferences, Andrea has worked tirelessly to ensure the youth of Cheshire County as well as the larger N.H. 4-H program have an opportunity to experience all that 4-H has to offer. Whether Andrea is working with 4-H volunteers or mentoring her Extension colleagues, Andrea reminds us all that to be effective it is essential to remain youth-centered in all that we do. I know that I am a better youth development professional because of her continued support. I am so very grateful for all that Andrea has done to make the best better."
