UNH Extension Seeks a Greenhouse and Nursery Production Extension Specialist/Faculty

Summary of Position

Undertake engaged outreach and research in the field of greenhouse and nursery crop production.

This is a non-tenure track position as follows: 75% extension (University of New Hampshire Cooperative Extension – UNHCE), 25% research (New Hampshire Agricultural Experiment Station – NHAES).

This position will be assigned to UNHCE’s Landscape and Greenhouse Horticulture team within the Food and Agriculture Program, and as an affiliate faculty member of the College of Life Sciences and Agriculture’s (COLSA) Department of Agriculture, Nutrition, and Food Systems.

The successful candidate will integrate research with extension programming, placing an emphasis on serving the needs of the diverse green industry, including greenhouse, floriculture, nursery, and garden center businesses in the state and region. He or she will be expected to develop a collaborative and competitively funded applied research program that could address: greenhouse crop production, floriculture or edible crops, plant nutrition, substrates, energy use efficiency, lighting and other greenhouse technologies, and/or other relevant areas contributing to environmental and economic sustainability.

Collaborative work with commercial growers in the state and region is expected.

We anticipate the candidate will develop strong synergies with existing and new faculty and specialists working in diverse areas of agricultural systems including horticulture, crop development, and protected agriculture.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to mentor undergraduate and graduate students in COLSA’s Department of Agriculture, Nutrition, and Food Systems.

The position includes 25% NHAES funding which meets the Extension state specialist requirement of 25% funding external to UNHCE. Working under the auspices of UNHCE and NHAES, the successful candidate will be expected to compete successfully in national and regional funding initiatives, and to achieve prominence in their field of scholarship.

Other Minimum Qualifications

  1. Ph.D. in appropriate discipline.
  2. Demonstrated effective interpersonal and written communication skills.
  3. Ability to integrate new and emerging technologies into effective and innovative teaching strategies.
  4. Demonstrated ability to work well as part of a team.
  5. Demonstrated knowledge of greenhouses and greenhouse environments, diverse horticultural crops, production technologies, and problem-solving skills; willingness to work with diverse producers, operations and garden centers throughout the state.
  6. Experience in conceiving, planning, undertaking and publishing independent research.

Additional Preferred Qualifications

  1. Experience working in or with the greenhouse industry.
  2. Experience in securing competitive extramural funding.
  3. Experience in mentoring and/or managing students or staff.

Duties/Responsibilities

Extension (75%)

  1. Under the direction of the Food and Agriculture Program Team Leader and in collaboration with Cooperative Extension’s Landscape and Greenhouse Horticulture Area of Expertise (AoE) team, faculty, and clientele groups, develop and implement innovative outreach programs for New Hampshire’s environmental horticulture industry.
  2. Assess statewide, regional and national needs, issues and trends in greenhouse and nursery crop production and use this information as a basis for program development.
  3. Publish and disseminate information to peers and clientele groups through appropriate presentations, publications and electronic delivery systems.
  4. Provide leadership and support to colleagues in the development, implementation and evaluation of high impact educational programs.
  5. Collaborate with colleagues internal and external to UNH to develop, implement and evaluate multi-state outreach programs.
  6. Serve as chair of Cooperative Extension’s Landscape and Greenhouse Horticulture Area of Expertise (AoE) on a rotational basis, as assigned by the Program Team Leader.
  7. Participate in professional development to enhance competence in the appropriate disciplines.
  8. Build and maintain partnerships with state and federal agencies.
  9. Serve on external boards and committees such as the New England Greenhouse Conference Board and the NH Plant Growers Association, as appropriate to enhance partnerships.
  10. Prepare an annual statewide impact report.
  11. Ensure programmatic involvement of under-served and under-represented audiences and ensure that all educational programming is conducted in full accordance with civil rights, Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO), Affirmative Action (AA) and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) policies and procedures.

Research (25%)

  1. Under the guidance of the NHAES Director, develop a nationally competitive research program of importance to the state and region, with an emphasis on greenhouse production and technology.
  2. Maintain an active NHAES Hatch research project as a basis to the research program.
  3. Routinely publish research results in peer-reviewed journals and related outlets.
  4. Compete successfully in national and regional funding initiatives to help support research activities.
  5. As appropriate, mentor undergraduate and graduate student research.
  6. Contribute to the mission of the college’s Department of Agriculture, Nutrition, and Food Systems, by participating in faculty meetings, serving on committees, and participating in other department activities.
