Summary of Position
- Ph.D. in Freshwater Ecology/Ecotoxicology or a closely related discipline.
- Demonstrated experience with water quality analyses of a wide range of parameters of concern for lakes and streams.
- Particular experience in Cyanophyta ecology, toxicology, and monitoring techniques.
- Demonstrated excellence in laboratory skills (microscopy, uv-vis spectroscopy, isolating and culturing pathogens and indicator organisms, inorganic, organic, and ELISA diagnostic techniques).
- Demonstrated experience in freshwater sampling field techniques and the maintenance / use of field instrumentation such as GPS, depth finders, electronic water quality instrumentation (including multiparameter sondes and deployable logging sensors), water samplers, sediment samplers and net samplers.
- Demonstrated competency piloting small motorized and non-motorized watercraft and watercraft safety.
- Experience conducting on-site evaluations of water quality conditions/concerns, problems and in developing mitigation and management strategies.
- Demonstrated excellence in teaching Lake Ecology and related subjects.
- Demonstrated excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work well as part of a team.
- Demonstrated laboratory and field team management skills, including supervising and training technical staff and student (undergraduate and graduate) workers.
Additional Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working in New England or similar freshwater aquatic systems.
- Experience developing or reviewing watershed-based management plans, water quality loading/response models and/or nutrient budgets.
- Experience working with volunteer water quality monitors/community-based monitoring.
- Experience in maintaining quality assurance and quality control for a water quality laboratory.
- Experience in conceiving, planning, undertaking, and publishing independent research.
- Experience in all aspects of Extension programming, including needs assessment, cultivating relationships with stakeholders, marketing, impact evaluation, and reporting.
- Experience working and communicating with diverse clientele in a variety of ways; including in-person, by email, phone and other electronic communication methods.
- Demonstrated competence in use of modern technologies and their application to Extension program development and delivery.
- Experience in securing competitive extramural funding, and in budget development and management.
- Extension – 80% of Effort: Serve as Director, and manage all aspects of the NH LLMP, including: • Supervision of the NH LLMP Program/Laboratory Manager • Analysis of lake and stream water quality samples submitted by volunteer monitors, researchers, agencies, students, and others. • Production of annual water quality reports to associations, towns, and other participating groups. • Maintenance of the NH LLMP long-term database for samples received and processed. Ensure that the proofed data are delivered to the NH Department of Environmental Services for them to digitally publish to their OneStop Data Mapper as well as the National Water Quality Portal on an annual basis. • Successfully secure extramural funding (gifts, grants and income recovery) to maintain the operation of the NH LLMP and the LLMP lab. • Participation in marketing efforts to promote volunteer and student participation in the NH LLMP and related programs through presentations, guest lectures, the NH LLMP website and other opportunities as they arise. • Develop and conduct water quality training events for educators, students, professionals, agency staff, extension staff, volunteers, and others. • Collaborate with state regional and national partners to detect and monitor the extent of cyanobacteria and related harmful aquatic blooms as well as disseminate related research-based information. Partners include the NH Department of Environmental Services, the NH Lakes Association, the US EPA New England Regional Laboratory, and the North American Lake Management Society. • Publish and disseminate information to peers, cooperators, stakeholders and the public through appropriate presentations, publications, and electronic delivery systems. • Assess statewide, regional, and national needs, challenges and trends in water resources issues related to lakes and streams and use this information as a basis for program development. • Collaborate with colleagues internal and external to UNH to develop, implement and evaluate multi-state outreach programs and products related to water resources monitoring, stewardship and management, as well as mitigating the impacts of climate change on water resources, particularly lakes and streams. • Provide leadership and support to field specialists in the development, implementation, and evaluation of high impact educational programs. • Participate in professional development to enhance competence in water quality, aquatic ecology, watershed management and related disciplines. • Prepare an annual statewide impact report. • Ensure programmatic involvement of under-served and under-represented audiences and ensure that all educational programming is conducted in full accordance with civil rights, Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO), Affirmative Action (AA) and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) policies and procedures.
- Teaching – 20% of Effort: Teach one course per year and advise undergraduate students on behalf of DBS, as mutually agreed upon and based on department and college needs. • Provide service to components of academic programs as requested. • Work closely with DBS and COLSA to identify and facilitate potential internship opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students. • Support and mentor COLSA undergraduate and graduate students in academics and applied research and contribute to graduate student committees as a committee member or chair as appropriate. • Contribute to the mission of DBS by participating in faculty meetings, serving on committees, participating in other department activities, and leveraging the resources of Extension.
