UNH Extension Seeks an Extension Field Specialist, 4-H Healthy Living: Outdoor Education in Coös County

This position is based at UNH Extension's Coös County office in Lancaster, N.H.

The 4-H Healthy Living Field Specialist, located in Lancaster, N.H. with statewide responsibilities, will be responsible for providing leadership in determining needs, establishing priorities, and in developing, marketing, implementing, evaluating and reporting educational programs for the N.H. 4-H Healthy Living pathway focused on Outdoor Education. Pathway development involves providing leadership in determining needs, establishing priorities, and in developing, marketing, implementing, and evaluating programs. The pathway includes: (1) the essential content-focused touchpoints for youth, families and volunteers throughout the 4-H programming year, and (2) academic and career development opportunities in health and wellness. Program development must include strategies to engage youth and families experiencing poverty, instability, disabilities, cultural differences and/or other barriers to participation. The specialist will work across Extension Area of Expertise and Program Teams, and with university departments to develop/identify these content touchpoints and career development opportunities. The field specialist will serve as the Barry Conservation 4-H Camp Administrator and as a member of the 4-H Coös County Cooperative Extension team. UNH is a federal contractor within the meaning of the Executive Order on Ensuring Adequate COVID Safety Protocols for Federal Contractors. Duties and responsibilities:
 
Educational Program Development and Evaluation in 4-H Healthy Living Outdoor Education
  • Develop high impact, relevant outdoor educational programs with specific touchpoints to advance academic/career development opportunities for N.H. youth and families. Program development to include identification and development of research-based curriculum.
  • Develop and coordinate state, regional and/or national events/opportunities
Personnel/Volunteer Supervision and Management
  • Collaborate with N.H. 4-H County program managers to deliver local and regional outdoor educational programming.
  • Provide supervision and performance management for assigned program coordinator staff.
  • Establish and manage a system for recruiting, training and involving volunteers where appropriate to assist in developing, conducting and evaluating outdoor educational programs and activities in accordance with the UNH Cooperative Extension Volunteer Management System.
Barry Conservation 4-H Camp Administrator:
  • Develop summer and extended season camp programming.
  • Manage programmatic risks associated with camp in compliance with state, UNH, and UNHCE policies and procedures.
  • Manage camp finances
  • Oversee enrollment and registration processes
  • Evaluate 4-H camp experiences
  • Hire and supervise camp staff
  • Maintain strong relationship with N.H. Fish & Game
  • Maintain ACA accreditation.

Resource Development
  • Increase resources for greater capacity of healthy living programming in outdoor wellness. In addition to grant development and writing, efforts could include fee-for-service programing, collaboration with partner agencies, and/or pathway specific donor solicitation.
  • Partner with community organizations to expand resources and opportunities for enhanced pathway reach and impact.
Coös County 4-H
  • Collaborate with Coös County 4-H program staff to implement localized 4-H Healthy Living- Outdoor Education programming.
  • Serve as the county office administrator for UNH Extension in Coös County when appointed by the associate director, in consultation with the program team leader and in consideration of the individual and program team’s programmatic priorities. This is a 20% appointment with a stipend. The field specialist’s programmatic workload will be reduced to accommodate this appointment
Other Duties as assigned
Minimal Educational Requirements:

Masters level or higher in appropriate discipline. A strong candidate with a B.S. level degree candidate in appropriate discipline with experience may be considered if they are willing to obtain a M.S. degree within 7 years of hire.

Additional preferred qualifications
  • Demonstrate a high degree of subject matter competence in outdoor wellness and education.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively and cooperatively with coworkers and clients with a variety of values and interests and of all ages, ethnic backgrounds, income and education levels.
  • Possess the ability to work with minimum supervision, handle multiple demands, and set priorities.
  • Be willing and able to travel frequently, locally and statewide. Mileage will be reimbursed at the federal rate.
  • Be available to work some nights and weekends.
  • Experience or familiarity with Extension programs.
  • Knowledge of American Camping Association standards and practices.
  • Have experience in outdoor education program development and oversight.
