From forensics to creative writing to biotechnology, there are lots of opportunities to continue learning during the summer months

UNH is offering several exciting programs for youth and teachers this summer that might be of interest to youth and families who participate in Extension programs. Some are online and some are in Dover;  all necessary COVID-19 health and safety protocols will be followed.

Tech Camp will be offered at no cost to participants this year, thanks to generous support from the New Hampshire Department of Transportation and Federal Highway Administration (through the National Summer Transportation Institute program), the National Institutes of Health and several other donors.

Dinah Whipple STEAM Academy | July 12-16, 2021 | Grades 7-10 | Online | Free

New this year to Tech Camp is the Dinah Whipple STEAM Academy, an immersive online educational program that explores science, technology, engineering, the arts and mathematics (STEAM), as well as the Black experience. The academy is named after Dinah Whipple, a significant figure in New Hampshire history best known for founding the state’s first school for Black children in Portsmouth circa 1806. Learn More

TechSplorers | July 12-16 and July 19-23| Online | Grades 5-8 | Free

This program cycles through a variety of STEM topics, which may include environmental engineering, music and computer coding, building and simulating bridges, foundation design using Jenga blocks, making and testing materials for roads that you can eat and more. TechVenturers | July 12-16, July 19-23 Online and July 26-30 In-person| Grades 8-10 | Free

In the first session (held online), students will employ classic forensic techniques to solve a fictious murder mystery involving celebrity detective Inspector Gadget. In the second session (held online), students can choose an in-depth project focused on either computer coding or civil/structural engineering. In the third session (held in-person at Dover High School), students will undertake an in-depth project examining a model organism that regrows lost body parts. Learn More

In the first session (held online), students will focus on bioinformatics – computer science to answer biological questions. In the second session (held in-person at Dover High School), students will focus on an in-depth project that explores how scientists are trying to preserve cells and tissues by freezing. Learn More

Tech for Teachers Institute: Regenerative Medicine and Biofabrication | July 19-30, 2021 | Dover|  Free

Tech for Teachers Institute is a dynamic professional development program open to middle and high school teachers from across all STEM subject areas. Teachers will build knowledge of emerging technologies and focus on transformation of instructional practice through project-based learning. In-person sessions will be held at Dover High School. Participants receive a $1,500 award. Learn More

 The Community Literacy Center staff will hold online sessions to spark imagination, share writing techniques and create a supportive group of young writers. Designed for students in grades 5-12. Learn More

EPIC — Elementary Programming | Thursdays, July 8 - August 5 | Online | $250 + $200 refundable deposit

EPIC is designed to inspire the next generation of computing innovators by engaging young students in learning computational thinking skills and programming fundamentals. EPIC will be offered as an online program with an optional check-in one day per week with COVID-19 protocols in place. Fee: $250 for the camp and a $200 robotic kit deposit that will be refunded at end of program if equipment is returned. Enrollment closes on June 24. Learn More

GenCyber | July 19-23 | Grades 9 &10 | Online | Free

Students will collaboratively solve puzzles in teams, decode secret messages and virtually hunt for “treasures,” culminating in a day-long cybersecurity challenge on the final day of camp. Learn More

IOL HighTech Bound Internship | July 12-August 13 | Online | Paid internship

The UNH IOL (InterOperability Lab) is a virtual five-week, paid summer internship designed for rising high school seniors who will gain real-world experience working with the latest technology. Learn More

Project SMART | July 7-28 | Online | Grades 11 & 12

Project SMART (Science and Mathematics Achievement through Research Training) challenges, educates and motivates talented high school students in science and technology. Students will study advanced topics and techniques in animal, human, plant and microbial biotechnology through lectures and discussions. Learn More
