UNH is offering several exciting programs for youth and teachers this summer that might be of interest to youth and families who participate in Extension programs. Some are online and some are in Dover; all necessary COVID-19 health and safety protocols will be followed.
Tech Camp will be offered at no cost to participants this year, thanks to generous support from the New Hampshire Department of Transportation and Federal Highway Administration (through the National Summer Transportation Institute program), the National Institutes of Health and several other donors.
Dinah Whipple STEAM Academy | July 12-16, 2021 | Grades 7-10 | Online | Free
New this year to Tech Camp is the Dinah Whipple STEAM Academy, an immersive online educational program that explores science, technology, engineering, the arts and mathematics (STEAM), as well as the Black experience. The academy is named after Dinah Whipple, a significant figure in New Hampshire history best known for founding the state’s first school for Black children in Portsmouth circa 1806. Learn More

This program cycles through a variety of STEM topics, which may include environmental engineering, music and computer coding, building and simulating bridges, foundation design using Jenga blocks, making and testing materials for roads that you can eat and more. In the first session (held online), students will employ classic forensic techniques to solve a fictious murder mystery involving celebrity detective Inspector Gadget. In the second session (held online), students can choose an in-depth project focused on either computer coding or civil/structural engineering. Tech for Teachers Institute is a dynamic professional development program open to middle and high school teachers from across all STEM subject areas. Teachers will build knowledge of emerging technologies and focus on transformation of instructional practice through project-based learning. In-person sessions will be held at Dover High School. EPIC — Elementary Programming | Thursdays, July 8 - August 5 | Online | $250 + $200 refundable deposit
EPIC is designed to inspire the next generation of computing innovators by engaging young students in learning computational thinking skills and programming fundamentals. EPIC will be offered as an online program with an optional check-in one day per week with COVID-19 protocols in place.
