The UNH Equine Program and NH 4-H are partnering to offer a series of educational sessions for those interested in all things equine! This program is recommended for ages 11 and up.

Session Dates and Descriptions

Tuesday, July 27: Using Equine Evolution and Domestication to understand Equine Behavior and Safe Handling

Understanding equine behavior is the key to safe handling skills that prevent injury to horse and rider alike. Sarah Rigg, Director of the UNH Equine Program, will provide an overview of equine evolution and domestication and how they continue to influence equine behavior and then use that information as a framework for building safe handling skills.

Tuesday, August 3: The Horse in History

An overview of the horse’s role in human history, highlighting interesting facts and ways in which the horse’s historic roles influenced history and can still be seen today – if you know where to look! Presented by Sarah Rigg, Director of the UNH Equine Program.

Tuesday, August 10: Successful and Safe Showing: Planning for Success, Staying Safe, and Getting Noticed for the Right Reasons!

Sarah Rigg, Director of the UNH Equine Program, USEF Technical Delegate, and coach of the 2009 National Champion IDA Team will discuss how to make a plan for show season success, including goal setting, planning your season, planning for show day, staying safe in the warm-up, and getting noticed!

Tuesday, August 17: Equine Nutrition

Professor Laurie Chapman-Bosco of the UNH Equine Program and USPC National Examiner, Chief Horse Management Judge, member of the National Testing Curricula Committee, and recipient of the 2021 USPC Founders Award will present an overview of equine nutritional needs including feeding rules and equine nutrient requirements.

If you complete all four sessions, you will receive a 4-H custom grooming brush and a UNH equine sticker!

In-Person Pizza Party Option

We will also be hosting an in-person Zoom viewing pizza party for those interested for the first and last sessions at a barn in Dover, NH. There will be a short hands-on session following the Zoom session and pizza party. To get the details, register via 4-H Online!
