4-H Mindfulness Retreat

Teens and adults, ages 14 and up, are invited to join us at UNH’s Browne Center, located in Durham, NH, to participate in several different mindfulness-based activities to build their self-awareness and better manage their stress. Our skilled educators will guide them through a variety of mindfulness exercises, demonstrating its ease of application as well as its immediate and long-term benefits. Whether it’s yoga, journaling, or a walk in the woods, participants will be encouraged to reflect, learn, and connect with others in a safe and supportive environment. We only ask that you come with an open mind and heart, and maybe a yoga mat if you have one.

All participants will be going home with a clear mind, full heart, a handful of “tools,” and countless mindfulness strategies to apply to their daily life.

The event is open to non-4-H youth members as well as adults. However, anyone looking to participate in the retreat will have to register through 4-H Online and pay the registration fee. Space is limited to 40 participants.

Retreat Schedule

  • 9:30-10 a.m. - Arrival and Check-in
  • 10-10:30a.m. - Welcome and Intention Setting
  • 10:35-11:20a.m. - Session 1
  • 11:25a.m.-12:10p.m. - Session 2
  • 12:10-1:00p.m. - Provided Lunch* and Share Out
  • 1:05-1:50p.m. - Session 3
  • 1:55-2:40p.m. - Session 4
  • 2:45-3:25p.m. - Whole Group Activity
  • 3:30-4p.m. - Closing and Evaluation

All participants will rotate through all four sessions. While some sessions may be more physically demanding than others, all can be adapted to fit your comfort level. We adhere to a “challenge by choice” philosophy and only ask for your willingness to try new things.

*Light snacks and lunch will be provided and are included in your registration fee. Please indicate any dietary restrictions within your registration.

What to Bring

Participants will need to bring the following items:

  • Clothing comfortable for movement
  • Shoes for walking mixed terrain (wooded trails)
  • Extra water bottle (one will be provided)
  • Yoga mat (Only if you have one, DO NOT purchase one. We will have extras on-site!)

Session Descriptions

Guided Mindfulness Nature Walk

Kaitlin Muller-Cusack, M.Ed., B.S. Environmental Science, Trauma-Informed Registered Yoga Teacher from Taking Root, will provide guided nature walks to explore around the Browne Center's trails and be led through a mindfulness activity to engage your mind and body. Kaitlin holds a New Hampshire Experienced Educator License and has done extensive work in the field of nature-based social emotional learning in order to build resilience in the areas of self-confidence, body awareness, self-regulation, self-control, regulate nervous system & reduce stress and anxiety, in and outside of the classroom.

Mindful Writing

Daisy Young, UNH ’23, is a senior at the University of New Hampshire, majoring in English, Sustainability, and Social Justice Leadership. Daisy will be guiding participants through mindful writing exercises that will allow them to tap into their creative side and connect with their thoughts. Currently, Daisy is working as a summer intern with UNH Extension’s Health and Well-Being Team, focusing on community resilience and youth mental health. In addition to this role, Daisy also shares her passion for organizing and writing as the managing editor of Main Street Magazine.

Mindful Me Calming Jars

Kendra Lewis, Ph.D., is the State Specialist for Youth & Family Resiliency within the Health and Well-Being Team at the University of New Hampshire Extension. Kendra will be guiding participants through a hands-on Mood Management exercise from the peer reviewed 4-H curricula she coauthored, Mindful Me and Mindful Mechanics. She previously worked for Cooperative Extension in California as the Academic Coordinator for Evaluation for 4-H Youth Development, in which she coordinated the statewide evaluation of 4-H programming and collaborated with Extension staff on research projects. She has a background in human development, a proficiency in program evaluation, and a passion for social emotional learning.

Vinyasa Yoga

Michelle Silvia, B.S, carries a New Hampshire Experienced Educator License and has over twenty years of service, teaching both the middle and high school level students. In addition to this work, Michelle is a Registered Yoga Teacher (RYT500) and level one certified Reiki instructor and spends a great deal of her out-of-school time sharing her passion for yoga and self-discovery. Michelle will lead participants through a Vinyasa flow with a focus on breath and movement connection. Practicing yoga is a form of meditation in motion with calming benefits to your internal landscape. She asks participants to come to their mat with an open mind, a kind heart, and no expectations.
