Bat Conservation & Forestry for Northeast Foresters
8:30am - 4:00pm
followed by optional evening session
Due to threats like loss of habitat, white-nose syndrome, and human activities, all of New Hampshire’s eight bat species are currently listed as Endangered, Threatened, or as a Species of Special Concern. Foresters and other natural resource professionals can help to conserve and enhance bat habitat on managed lands. Many voluntary practices for bats overlap with conservation actions that benefit forest birds and protect water quality.
Attendees will learn about New Hampshire’s bat species and their ecology, review conservation practices that benefit bats, and visit field sites to discuss management techniques for bat- and bird-friendly forests. Participants should come dressed for the weather and prepared to spend the afternoon outside (rain or shine), with appropriate footwear and bug protection.
8:30am - 4:00pm: Indoor presentations on Bat Species of New Hampshire and their Ecology, Bat Conservation, and Management Practices for Caves, Mines, Wetlands, Surface Waters, Forests and Openings followed by a Bat and Bird Friendly Forest Management Field Tour. The field visit will cover habitat assessment, acoustic surveys, riparian features, invasive control, snag and gap creation, roost tree, mast tree and supra-canopy tree retention, expanding gaps, irregular shelterwoods, and patch cuts.
4:00 - 6:00pm: Early Evening Session (optional): Participants will have the opportunity to hear and see forest birds up-close, during a mist netting session with a local bird biologist.
Participants can register for the day-long session, or both the day-long and early evening sessions. Register by May 25. No person shall be denied the opportunity to participate in this program because of inability to pay. If you have special needs in order to participate, contact us 2 weeks in advance of the program date.
