[CHANGED TO ONLINE] - 2020 STEaMpunk Invention Challenge
Due to the public health concern caused by the COVID-19 virus, UNH administration made the decision to cancel all UNH Cooperative Extension events, programs and noncredit classes through April 5. The health and safety of our staff and the many members of our New Hampshire communities that participate in our programs is most important. We appreciate your understanding and patience during this uncertain time.
The 4-H Makers Expo is canceled. The STEaMpunk Chain Reaction Challenge will be changed to an online video contest. Check back for updates.
About the Program
STEaMpunk Inventions are crazy chain reaction contraptions that do something simple, like counting chickens, in an overly complicated way. Every year 4-H members have a chance to build their own STEaMpunk Invention and showcase it at the 4-H Makers Expo. STEaMpunk Inventions always follow a theme, this year it's...
Count Your Chickens Before They Hatch
Teams work to design and build a unique STEaMpunk invention that completes a chain reaction of events that counts chickens along the way. Any kind of chicken may be counted, but not live ones, though eggs are okay. All participating teams must include more than one chicken and count each one in some way. How they include and count each chicken is up to each team. Chickens can be "counted" in any step. Just don't put all your eggs in one basket.
The Rules Your invention must:
- Include 2 or more "chickens" and count them in some way.
- Complete 5 or more steps
- Have a run time of 2 minutes or less
- Fit inside a 16 ft2 footprint and be no taller than 5’
- Be free standing
- Start a team (2-8 kids is ideal) ages 8 – 18 (4-H Chicken Clubs make great teams)
- Find a coach, advisor or mentor
- Do some research – Google terms like "Rube Goldberg machine" or "chain reaction machine"
- Collect a big pile of stuff and start tinkering
Showcase your Invention at the 4-H Makers Expo on April 25, 2020 and be evaluated by STEaM professionals to be eligible for prizes.
