Strengthening your Facilitation Skills

This two-day workshop will help you develop skills and strategies to more effectively and efficiently facilitate work groups, community groups, coalitions, and collaborations. Through this training, participants will learn to:

  • Create collaborative relationships.
  • Design and customize processes to meet the needs of specific groups.
  • Develop intentional facilitation practices and use facilitation mapping to design meetings.
  • Identify behaviors that hinder and help a group process.
  • Strengthen participatory and interpersonal skills and increase ability to manage group conflict.

Cultivate: An Educators Guide to Food Systems Educator Series

The Food System program provides a rigorous and relevant look at how we relate to our food system through authentic science and reflective practice.  Educators will learn about topical teaching sequences, gearing lessons towards NGSS standards, planning deeper explorations into food systems with your class, and most importantly excite youth about the natural world!

Field Trip 101: A Volunteer Training

A Speaking for Wildlife Volunteer Training

This fun and interactive volunteer training will provide you with the basics of planning and executing a guided walk. Participants in this free training should be willing to commit to leading at least one outdoor event in the subsequent 12 months as part of the Speaking for Wildlife program. You can do it! It’s easy, it’s fun, and we promise you’ll feel prepared after this workshop!

This workshop is open to all natural resource volunteers including SPNHF Land Stewards, Natural Resource Stewards, Coverts Cooperators, NHFG Wildlife Stewards, NH Audubon volunteers, Conservation Commissioners, and other community volunteers.

28th Annual Tree Farm Field Day

Join us as Bruce Townsend and his daughter Heidi Bundy share their property with us and talk about how their family has cared for this property for over 200 years.


The day will include ...

• Learn about the maple sugaring operation and visit the sugarbush and sugar house.
• Take a forest management tour with a visit to a recent timber sale, and see an equipment demonstration.
• Ride through the fields on a hay wagon. Visit a champion butternut tree and learn about controlling invasive plants.

Community Outreach and Engagement will provide you with the skills to do effective outreach and engagement in your community and to understand the difference. This workshop will cover the benefits and challenges of community engagement. You will learn how to identify audiences to engage such as business community, residents, leaders, youth and under-represented groups. You will hear about the many engagement tools you can use such as storytelling circles, focus groups, rich pictures, interviews, posters and story maps. You will come away with the skills to develop and implement a targeted volunteer led plan for community engagement and in doing so, strengthen your project and community.

Getting Started with Sheep

October 6 (8:00 am -5:00 pm) and Oct 7 (8:00 am - 4:00 pm)

This is a two-day workshop for the beginner that uses a combination of classroom exercises and hands-on instructions. It will cover the different production and husbandry practices involved in raising sheep. Class size will be kept small to facilitate teacher-participant interaction. Participants will also be allowed to take extra time if needed with the hands-on exercises.

 

Day One Program:

  •  So, You Want Sheep (Overview of getting started with sheep, including breed selection and possible markets)
  •  Facilities for Sheep (Overview of handling and feeding equipment for sheep along with building floor plans)
  •  Basic Nutrition, Feeding, and Body Condition Scoring (Feeding the ewe, lamb ram, to market or breeding age, understanding production states, good forages and feedstuffs, adding pasture to the mix)
  •  Basics of Electric Fencing (Everything you need to know)
  •  Prescribed Grazing Systems (Overview offers an effective way to reduce energy use, decrease costs, and improve animal health and productivity).
  •  Grazing as it Relates to Parasite Controls

Day Two Program:

  •  Introduction to FAMACHA and FECs
  •  Going with the Flow; Moving Animals
  •  Health & Herd Health Practices (taking temps, heart rates, breathing rates, recording vitals before the Vet comes and hands-on hoof trimming)
  •  Reproduction, Pregnancy, Lambing and Neonatal Care

 

Special Lunch Guest Speakers:

  •  Rob Gibson, Director of the NH Veterinary Diagnostic Lab, and a representative from the NH Dept. of Agriculture

 

A light continental breakfast and lunch are included on both days and a supper on the first night (5 PM). Participants are responsible for their own lodging. We will provide a list, directions, and full description of talks to those who register.
