Educator Training - Mousetrap Powered Cars
Tuesday, 12/06/2016 (05:30 PM - 08:30 PM)

This workshop is for educators interested in a fun, hands-on project for youth to design and build a small car powered by a mousetrap.  The curriculum supports youth in designing and building a car that they can modify and experiment with different features to make the car go as far as possible.  It is suitable for 4-H Clubs and SPINs, afterschool programs and elementary and middle school engineering projects.

Curriculum Description

Can you build a model car and power it with a mousetrap?  How far can you make it go?  Join other young engineers and design and build your own mousetrap powered car.  Make design modifications to make it roll faster and farther and then test your car to see if your design modifications work.  Then race your car in the 4-H Maker Challenge to see how it measures up against the cars of other young engineers.

 Mousetrap Cars Curriculum Activities

  1. Building a Basic Car – Participants use common materials to build a basic car that can be powered by a mousetrap.
  2. Attaching a Mousetrap – Participants attach a mousetrap to their car and try different ways to power the car.
  3. Modifying and Testing the Car - Participants modify their car and test different variables to make their car go farther.
  4. Building a Racecar – Using what they have learned, youth start from scratch to build a car to enter in the 4-H Maker Challenge.
  5. Presenting my Car (optional) – Participants will prepare a short presentations on the construction of their car, the design/build process and the overall experience.

2017 National 4-H Beekeeping Essay Contest
Friday, 02/10/2017 (All day)

Sponsored by: The Foundation for the Preservation of Honey Bees, Inc.

2017 Essay Topic: “How can MP3 (Managed Pollinator Protection Plan) more effectively protect honey bees from pesticide exposure?”

Beekeeping has had is five minutes of fame for the past seven years. Now more than ever, the general public along with beekeepers are asking “What will happen if the bees are gone?” With the continued threat of pesticides, this is a very real question. Your paper should research and help answer this question.

Survey your community to see what is being done. Include your state in your survey to see if there are any programs they are using for pollination or any other program that could aid the honey bee.

The scope of the research is an essential judging criterion, accounting for 40% of your score. The number of sources consulted, the authority of the sources, and the variety of the sources are all evaluated.

Personal interviews with beekeepers and others familiar with the subject are valued sources of information and should be documented. Sources, which are not cited in the endnotes, should be listed in a “Resources” or “Bibliography” list.

Note that “honey bee” is properly spelled as two words, even though many otherwise authoritative references spell it as one word.

DUE TO THE STATE 4-H OFFICE BY FEBRUARY 10, 2017.
