Tree and Shrub Renovation Pruning for Tree Care and Landscape Professionals

Led by NH certified arborist and board-certified master arborist Lee Gilman, this hands-on training will guide participants through:

• how to grade the structure and form of trees and shrubs
• how to prioritize the most beneficial and efficient pruning opportunities
• how to make proper pruning cuts with consideration of the short and long-term effects on plant health

This session provides a combination of classroom instruction and hands-on experience, with guidance from arborists and UNH Extension pruning mentors on the UNH Durham campus. We’ll spend one hour indoors discussing pruning concepts and standards, then we’ll move outdoors for hands-on learning and demonstration, working within the ANSI A300 Part 1 standards.

Starting with a detailed assessment and establishing objectives before selecting suitable techniques allows pruning to correct identified concerns, reach production levels of productivity and improve the grade of landscape plantings. Renovation approaches pay off by improving value, storm resiliency, branding and billing rates beyond what is achieved with standard maintenance practices.

Renovation pruning styles can train tree and shrub development so that an otherwise wild structure, form and scale does not promote increases in disease and storm damage, leading to a reduced life span. Pruning that improves safety, health, aesthetics and function in a built-environment is a critical skill for tree care and landscape professionals.

Participants should bring their own pruning equipment, including hand pruners, loppers, and pruning saws. A limited number of loaner tools will be available. The majority of this session will be held outdoors. Please dress for the weather and bring water. Coffee and pastries will be provided during the opening classroom session.
