4-H Wildside challenges YOU to head outdoors with your family and friends, learn a bit about the natural environment, and get in touch with your Wildside during the spring and early summer months.

The 4-H Wildside Spring Invasive Species Challenge is an annual program for youth ages 5-18 designed to get youth and families outdoors and active in the Spring and learn a little about our natural environment. The Challenge begins on Earth Day in April and ends mid-July.

To complete the Invasive Species Challenge, locate and document at least six invasive species following the guidelines in the ISC Field Book by the Challenge end date. Each youth who completes the Challenge can earn a limited-edition Invasive Species Challenge patch.

You do not need to be a 4-H member to participate in this challenge and earn your patch, and club leaders, parents, and other activity facilitators may modify the Challenge to fit the abilities of their group.

What are invasive species?

Invasive species are exotic plant and animal life that is not native to the natural habitat. These species can out-compete and threaten the health of the other species native to the area and the entire habitat. New Hampshire boasts rich and diverse habitats, and this challenge will encourage you to explore them all and learn about them through the lens of what’s NOT supposed to be there.

How It Works

The Challenge functions like Pokémon Go or geocaching in the sense that you will discover a location where an invasive species is, go there, and search around for it. It’s also like a scavenger hunt in the sense that you will have a list of invasive species to locate and document.

To complete the Invasive Species Challenge, locate and document at least six invasive species following the guidelines in the provided ISC Field Book by the Challenge end date. Each youth who completes the Challenge can earn a limited-edition Invasive Species Challenge patch (pictured above).
