Whether you manage land professionally or simply enjoy spending time outdoors, learning to recognize and interpret wildlife tracks and sign can deepen your understanding of the natural world. Tracks, scat, browse, feathers, and other signs reveal which species are present, how they move across the landscape, and how they interact with different habitats. For natural resource professionals, these observations can inform management decisions and conservation planning. For outdoor enthusiasts, they offer a fascinating window into the hidden lives of wildlife.
Join Extension wildlife biologists Haley Andreozzi and Emma Tutein and wildlife track and sign specialist Daniel Hansche of Spur Wander and Tracker Certification for a full day in the field. Together, we’ll explore forests, fields, and wetlands in search of tracks, scat, browse, and other wildlife sign. You’ll learn techniques for accurately identifying sign, interpreting animal behavior, and understanding the stories animals leave behind on the landscape. Whether you're a forester, land manager, conservation professional, hunter, educator, or simply curious about wildlife, this workshop will help you sharpen your observation skills and gain a new perspective on the places you explore.
This workshop is entirely outdoors – please dress for the weather, wear sturdy footwear, and bring lunch and water for the day. Participants should be able and prepared to walk on uneven terrain, sometimes off-trail.
