From Field to Market: Safe Handling and Flood Mitigation Strategies

Join UNH Extension’s Beginning Farmer and Food Safety programs at Barker's Farm for an interactive field workshop exploring how farm resilience, food safety, and efficient post-harvest handling work together to support a successful farm operation. Through a guided tour of Barker's Farm, participants will see firsthand how conservation practices such as drainage systems, swales, field roads, and water management infrastructure can help reduce flood impacts, protect soil health, and minimize risks to crop safety. 

The workshop will also highlight practical food safety and wash-pack management strategies, including produce handling workflows, standard operating procedures, waste management systems, and methods for preventing cross-contamination. Participants will learn how thoughtful farm design- from the field to the wash-pack facility- can improve efficiency, maintain produce quality, and reduce food safety risks. The program will also include a discussion with NRCS (Natural Resources Conservation Service) about conservation and technical assistance opportunities.  

This workshop is geared towards beginning farmers, but all are welcome. There is no cost, but registration is appreciated.
