UNH Summer Intern works to increase the information about Accessible Trails in NH

  • Pierce

Each summer, UNH Extension provides undergraduate students valuable opportunities to work in communities, build their professional skills and support our work across the state. Join us in welcoming Pierce Fernandez, an intern this summer helping to support the Trail Finder and accessible trails.

My name is Pierce Fernandez and I am a rising senior at the University of New Hampshire studying Environmental Conservation and Sustainability. I am thrilled for the opportunity to work with UNH Cooperative Extension this summer as the Accessible Trails Intern.

Accessibility to nature means a lot to me, as I’ve had so many formative experiences in the outdoors—experiences I believe everyone should have the opportunity to enjoy. My love for nature was sparked by my grandfather, who taught me how to be a steward of the wilderness during our time together in the White Mountains. He always encouraged me to stay engaged with the people and organizations who shared my values. That inspiration led me to join a volunteer trail crew with the Appalachian Mountain Club during high school, which later turned into a full-time trail crew position after graduation. I then worked a season as a USFS Wildland Firefighter in Utah before returning east to attend UNH.

During my time at UNH, I’ve continued to deepen my commitment to outdoor stewardship. I returned to AMC as a project leader focused on building accessible trails, and I stay involved on campus through the Mountain Bike Team and Ski Club. I’m excited to take on this new role with Cooperative Extension, where I’ll be able to apply both my field experience and academic background to make New Hampshire’s trails more inclusive and welcoming. This summer is an opportunity to grow professionally, give back to the land, and help others experience the freedom and peace that comes with time spent outdoors.
