Want to learn more about timber harvesting and forest management? Join managing forester for the town of Pelham, Eric Radlof, of Full Circle Forestry, UNH Extension Forester, Mike Gagnon, and Pelham Forestry Committee member Christine Gallaher for a walking tour of a recently completed timber harvest on the 175-acre Cutter Meriam Town Forest in Pelham.
During this short 1.5 mile walk we will discuss the management goals of the recently completed timber sale, the logistics of how a timber sale takes place from start to finish, the markets and products for the trees harvested, how harvesting is used as tool for managing habitats, and how sensitive sites and resources are protected throughout the process. The Pelham town forest as a whole is enrolled in the Tree Farm program. This program promotes a multiple-use concept as a management strategy. The Cutter-Merriam Town Forest is a diverse property which serves as an example of how the tree farm concept of management can be applied successfully to a municipal owned land base.
What to Bring: Comfortable sturdy shoes, clothes appropriate for the field (sun and bug protection), hat, water bottle. Most of the tour will take place on easy walking trails. However, some of the tour will take place off-trail on uneven ground in the recent harvest site.
This event is free, but space is limited, registration is required.
