Bad Robots are simple robots made from scraps, junk, craft supplies and a motor to create a simple moving robot. As the name implies, Bad Robots do not have to be any good, because they are meant to be “Bad”. The focus of this family activity is on fun and creativity where kids can work with parents and 4-H volunteers to build a small robot. After youth build their bots, there will be an optional Bad Robot Contest to see whose robot can push the other bots out of the challenge ring.
Building your Bot
Build time is an Open House format. Participants should plan on 30 – 60 minutes to build their robots. Basic instruction and materials will be handed out to participants and guidance from 4-H volunteers will be available throughout the build.
Bad Robot Contest
Competitors are encouraged to enter their robot in the Bad Robot Contest. In this is “robot wrestling match” robots have 1 minute to push their opponent out of a 50cm x 100cm ring. Successful robots move on to the next round. The contest emphasis is on fun, and spectacular failures are celebrated as much as any victories. Awards will be given for the “baddest” robots in the bunch. Complete contest rules can be found here.
Light snacks will be available for all participants.
