Women in the Woods: Map and Compass Basics

Are you looking to improve your map and compass skills? Join Emma Tutein and Charlotte Thompson from UNH Extension for an introduction to the basics about maps, compasses and how to use them together to navigate. We’ll spend a few hours indoors learning before heading outside to put our new skills to the test. Perfect for conservation commissioners, land trust volunteers, private landowners, and others interested in navigating off trail.  

This workshop will take place at the Graylag Nature Preserve. We will spend the first half of the workshop (~2.5 hours) inside and the latter half outside. Outside time will include time in the woods, off trail, and on uneven terrain. 

What to Bring: Your lunch, water, and note taking supplies. If you have a compass of your own, please bring it, but we will have compasses available for those who need one. Please come prepared to spend a couple of hours outdoors walking off-trail through variable terrain.

Essential Eligibility Criteria: Participants must be able to traverse uneven terrain for a distance of up to 1 mile independently, or with the assistance of a companion. 

Registration: Limited to 15 participants. To ensure this program is accessible for all, there are three registration fee options - $0, $5 or $10. Please pay what you can.
