Session 1: Farm Financial Records for Beginner Farmers | March 11
Understanding your farm’s financial health starts with strong record-keeping. This half-day workshop is designed for beginning farmers or those who want a refresher on financial statements and the fundamentals of farm financial management.
We will cover:
- The purpose and structure of key financial statements: Balance Sheet, Income Statement, and Cash Flow Statement
- Simple record-keeping practices to streamline tax season and improve financial clarity
- Hands-on exercises to help you build confidence in organizing and using your own financial records
By the end of the day, you’ll have a solid foundation in farm financial statements and be better prepared to use your records for decision-making.
Session 2: Using Enterprise Budgets to Evaluate Profitability | March 12
(Prerequisite: Farmers attending this class should have a solid understanding of a Balance Sheet, Income Statement, and Cash Flow Statement OR have attended Day 1.)
Once you have a solid financial recordkeeping system, the next step is putting those records to use. This workshop focuses on using Enterprise Budgets to evaluate individual farm enterprises and identify ways to improve profitability.
Participants will:
- Learn how to use an Enterprise Budget to assess whether a particular crop or livestock enterprise is profitable
- Work in small groups to create and evaluate sample enterprise budgets and financial statements
- Gain practical tools for making data-driven decisions with your own historical records
By the end of this session, participants will have an understanding of how to evaluate parts of a farm business as they relate back to the farm business as a whole.
Please register, class size is limited.
Farmers may attend one or both days, depending on their experience level and financial management needs.
A laptop computer is recommended for full participation, please contact William Hastings if you require one to participate.
