UNH Extension is offering a series of one-time food safety programs that provide food service workers and volunteers with up-to-date safe food handling information. S.A.F.E. – Safety Awareness in the Food Environment – was first developed and presented in 1991. With its many changes over the years, it is still a great class for new food service workers and a refresher for those who have been in food service for some time. The class covers NH Food Protection rules as well as follows the latest FDA Food Code guidelines.

SAFE for Food Service Workers and Volunteers topics include:

  • Why food workers should not be working when ill
  • The importance of personal health & hand hygiene
  • Preventing the spread of hazards in a food service kitchen
  • Preventing cross-contact of food allergens in a food service environment
  • Why cleaning & sanitizing are key in keeping a food safe kitchen
  • Important food safety temperatures as food flows throughout the kitchen

Join University of New Hampshire Extension’s food safety team for free, interactive, online Safety Awareness in the Food Environment (SAFE) workshops for food workers in schools, soup kitchens, feeding programs, hospitals, nursing homes, camps, restaurants, and delis. The class is also relevant for those who offer occasional meals to groups such as American Legion, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, and 4-H volunteers. Past participants have found the class helpful and intend to make changes to their food handling practices based on attending the class.

"SAFE was very helpful - thank you! I really appreciate the real-life examples /applications (i.e. the polls) that make the general information more tangible." -SAFE participant
