4-H Girl riding a horse

Hello, my name is Keelin Berger. I am 13 years old and have been involved with 4-H since I was 6. When I was little I joined the Peppermint Ponies 4-H club in Freemont NH. Jan Brubacher is my 4-H leader, she has taught me many things about 4-H and horses. Our club focuses on equine care and handling.

My favorite part of 4-H is learning new things at every meeting. Our club has participated in Christmas Caroling at the Rockingham County Nursing Home, club fundraisers (with donations to NHSPCA and Lucky’s Legacy), the Stratham and Deerfield fairs, Activities Day at UNH, and 4-H Circuit Horse Shows. Our club has gone on many club events, including the Coppal House Farm Corn Maze, a Halloween costume party, and a Christmas party with swimming. This summer we even slept in tents in the pony paddock at North Road Farm.

I volunteer every week at Lucky’s Legacy, a horse rescue center in Epping, where I have learned about the care of special needs horses. I have participated in the fairs by making educational posters, wooden animal sculptures, and photography. I enjoyed working with my friends in 4-H on the action exhibit and teaching the fair goers about horses. I have learned to do presentations with PowerPoint. I have also learned new things at craft events, sewing, knitting, and needle felting. My favorite 4-H event is the County Horse Show. The Peppermint Ponies won the stable hand award.

My biggest accomplishment was the Hands Award last year. 4-H fits into my life because of the new friendships I have made with people of all ages. Outside of 4-H I am involved in the National Junior Honor Society, Epping Middle School Band, volunteering at Lucky’s Legacy, and the children’s room in my town library.
