What’s not to love about sharing a meal and swapping stories about adventures on local lakes, trails, or farms? That’s just what happened at White Lake State Park in Tamworth one September evening this fall. Staff from the UNH Cooperative Extensions Carroll County office cooked up some juicy hamburgers and hotdogs, assembled some delicious salads and baked some to-die-for cookies and brownies to say thank you to some of the county’s 220 Extension volunteers. Lakes lay Monitors, master gardeners, 4-H volunteers, advisory council members and other volunteers came by to share their stories and meet Extension staff and other volunteers. In between bites of a burger and kale salad, one volunteer was overheard saying, “It’s so nice to meet Extension staff from other program areas – I had heard their names but not met them before.”
During the picnic it became evident that the biggest resource in Carroll County is the people and the time they give to protect our natural resources, and share their knowledge about gardens or nutrition to educate others and make this a better place to live. We truly appreciate our volunteers and the work they do and so enjoy working with them. Through the combined efforts of our Extension volunteers, over 7430 hours were worked (in 2017) in schools, on farms, in the forests, on lakes, with 4-H youth and more. Now that's a resource worth protecting.
