Try different varieties of apples and enjoy the crisp taste of fall

When you go to the farmers market in the fall, you will probably find these crispy ripe delicious apples. Apples are very versatile and can be used in many recipes or just washed and eaten.

Apples make a great addition in fresh garden salads; you can add them to your morning oatmeal, core and bake them with cinnamon and sugar, use them to make into pies and crisps. So why not try some of these crispy and delicious apples the next time you visit a local farmers market.

Extending the Bounty

Apples are available from August through October in New Hampshire, depending on the variety, but how can you enjoy them throughout the year? It covers canning and freezing, and instructions on how to make apple butter, apple juice, applesauce, sliced apples, spiced apple rings and spiced crab apples.

Serves: 8       Serving Size: 1/4 cup salsa, 4 cinnamon chips

Ingredients:

2 kiwi or peaches, peeled and diced

2 golden delicious apples, peeled, cored, and diced

1 pound strawberries, sliced, fresh or frozen

2 Tablespoons fruit preserves or jam, any flavor

4 10-inch flour tortillas

Butter flavored cooking spray

2 Tablespoons cinnamon sugar, see "Tips" for instructions

Directions:

  1. Nutrition Facts Label for Fruit Salsa and Cinnamon ChipsWash fruit in a large bowl, mix kiwis or peaches, apples, strawberries, and fruit preserves.

  2. Cover the bowl and chill in a refrigerator.

  3. Preheat oven to 350° Fahrenheit.

  4. Coat one side of each tortilla with butter flavored cooking spray.

  5. Cut each tortilla into 8 wedges and arrange in a single layer on a large baking sheet.

  6. Sprinkle wedges with desired amount of cinnamon sugar. Spray again with cooking spray.

  7. Bake in preheated oven 8 to 10 minutes.

  8. Repeat with any remaining tortilla wedges.

  9. Allow to cool for approximately 15 minutes.

  10. Serve with chilled fruit mixture.

Tips:

  • To make cinnamon sugar mix 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon with 2 Tablespoons sugar.
  • When you do not have these fruits on-hand, use any combination of fruits you like.
